EMG to BKP P'up swap clips

Ok,, Long story short, I have been an EMG guy for the last 20 years or so, every so often I get the urge to try something new, always to end up shoving the EMG right back in. The EMG's were never perfect, but closest to what I was going for. Over the last couple of years though I've been searching for this tone in my head and I'm still not quite there(closest with the Axe-fx though) and the only thing that is the constant are the EMG's. I've been kinda feeling the EMG's might not be what I'm needing anymore to help my tone evolve, So now with the bug biting me and some advancements in P'up tech, I thought, I'd give it a go again.

I have swapped out an EMG81 in my Jackson Warrior( Neck thru, Maple neck ,Ebony board, Poplar wings) for a Bare knuckles Warpig(ceramic magnet) and recorded 4 separate riffs with 3 different presets Before and After the swap so I could hear how they reacted to different models with different qualities and could compare them one at a time, and side by side mixed L+R so I could mute one side or the other.

The drums are a little louder in some clips, cause I changed Nothing but the presets, I wanted to be as neutral as I could be when judging for myself on the timber, volume, fullness, etc.. by not altering anything in the settings so in NO way were any of these meant to resemble production pieces,,and no animals were harmed during the recording process

The tracks marked (L) are one P'up, and the tracks marked (R) are the other pup,,single tracked and are panned in the middle.

The tracks marked (ST) are those P'ups panned hard Right and Left so I could just mute one or the other for quick swapping.

Sets 1 and 2 were recorded with a tweaked FAS Modern patch.

3 was recorded with and ENGL patch (Energyball)

4 was recorded with a VHT patch

Please post up which you think is which,, and which you like better and why.
Also,,Please disregard the sloppiness, and non production of these tracks, I really just did them to compare them for myself but figured I'd post them up for the hell of it here and there just to catch some opinions of one pup vers. the other.

I listened to the first six files. Sounded like pretty good playing to me.

Unfortunately, I didn't really hear much a difference between the two.

I would say, for comparisons, you should go with short bursts of examples. After listening for a minute, you don't really remember what you just heard. Or maybe its just me.

yeah,, they were really just for me but figured what the hell...

If you can mute sides while you listen to the stereo tracks(or use headphones and pull one off) you can hear a slight difference between the two.

I would never have tried BKP's or a Warpig, but I got one free in a case with an ESP Horizon I picked up. I through it in my HM Strat and damn! I don't know if it's the pickup or the guitar, because I bought the guitar as a mess on the cheap.

Also, because I got the warpig free, I don't know if it's a ceramic or an Alnico V version.

I don't like spaming anyone's pickups in general, but I am happy with this one (or the guitar?).

Oh and Dave, I won't be able to listen until after work. I'm not a huge EMG guy, I pretty much have one of everything in each of my 30 or so axes.

Both sound nice. The right side sounds a little more compressed like an EMG to me, seems maybe a tiny bit muddy and darker than the left side. I think I prefer the left side better.

I agree with toe , i think the left side is slightly better altough its hard to tell , i have been a long time EMG user but threw a ceramic pig in my ESP and love it !

The Left is the C-Warpig, and the Right was the EMG81.

I actually put the P'up into a different guitar last night cause there was something that bugged me with the tone in this guitar, but sounds great in the other one and I'm happy with it there. I'm gonna make a P'up Day" post later with an explanation and some pics(maybe a clip if I have the time).

Actually I, myself don't have to do that, I can mute either side from the board, or I can run both sides in Mono, the mute one while unmuting the other for quick soloing in both ears.

After having the C-pig in for a couple of days and became used to the "new sound" as great as it sounded, there was still something I couldn't quite put my finger on that I didn't like, which got me thinking.

Maybe, it has something to do with the fact that in this guitar the routing for the P'ups are slanted, and not strait on under the strings.


This leads to the strings being at odd alignments with the pole pieces at every string, So I'm thinking that might have something to do with it.

So I figure why not,,I'll try it in some other guitars and see if I like it better, or if I still hear the anomaly that I don't like as I also have a couple of guitars that need P'ups that have been Temp Wired. Like the warrior( except no kill switch) they have been wired so that I can test P'ups without having to solder them in. All I have to do is tin the ends of the wires, and plug the respective wire into the slot in the connector, Like a computer, or the Quick clip EMG's. This way If I don't like something I never have to cut any length off the wires, and allows me to try several different P'ups in a day to get some impressions and get some clips recorded to see how they stack up against each other. when I find a combination I like then I can either leave it like it is or solder it up into whatever configuration that guitar needs(ie, Vol,,,or Vol + Tone,,or ,,etc) and this has worked well for me over the years, although 95 percent of my guitars have EMG's in them I do have a few that do not

Anyway,,,I put the C-pig in another warrior, with a bolt on neck and a custom shattered plex-Mirror top, and did a little height adjusting on the p'up(I cannot stress how IMPORTANT this is) and then went through a few presets on my AXE-FX and strait into my Engl Savage120(just for good measure) and it sounds pretty kickin, with no weirdness whatsoever and I like it WAYYYYYYY better now:hbang:
It has the tightness I was expecting from the low end, with bite. In the other warrior, it had a more of a rounded tone, kinda like a neck P'pu in the way that it didn't have that "chk" sound when galloping on the low strings.

I believe the slant of the pickup is the source of the weirdness that I was hearing, so now I have to look for something else to go into it,, maybe something with rails (like the stock pups) instead of pole pieces.

Haven't made any clips yet,Its hard to get a really good shot because of the mirror top ,and the preview screen took a shit on my digital camera, so I have to take a bunch of pics blindly then see if any are worth a damn,, but did take a couple of pics of the C-pig in its new home. Nick(the Axe Palace) said he'd send me the 500K Vol pot, so when that gets here, I'll get it all soldered up and finished

The way the pickup is slanted on that old Warrior, it should make things warmer on the higher strings.

I like the sound of the left better myself. It also seems to cut through on the stereo mix a bit better, while the right sounds a bit muddy but it compliments the left nicely.
