  • Work In Progress

One of the tracks from my 3rd CD, which will be more Metal than my previous discs.

This one's called Colossus (after the old movie Colossus: The Forbin Project).

As I said, it's a work in progress, so it's just the rhythm/drums/bass.

Thanks. I'm still working on it, so it'll be finished eventually I used 4 different preamps into a line mixer, then into the PC into Adobe Audition.

Need to learn some new scales, though. Can only do so much with Pentatonics and Mixolydian

Keep working Newc, you have a hell of a start. It would be cool to do something like this among JCFers one person come up with a rhythm, then another put a bass line and another for the lead work. There has got to be some singers on here. Leave it to where anybody could get in on it. Sorry for the rude ramble Newc. Nice sounding, sir.

              Thanks.

As for the "party track" I think we tried that once some time ago and had little interest. Probably because it started off with just a snippet or riff, and there were too many directions the song could have gone in from there. If you post a more complete track, then you've pretty much got the rest of it written, so either way, it just rarely works out.

Nice man, I really like it. It is a great palette for, well everything really. Perfect sense of space, IMHO, great room for vocals, fills, solos, whatever. Really nice job. I will really like to hear this one finished. Keep us updated.

Got a 3-day weekend starting tomorrow. Hope to get more done. I did experiment with expanding it, but not sure if I want to do it as an instrumental or with vocals, and if I can come up with enough lyrics.

                    Got nothing done Friday

Saturday got off to a slow start. Got up at 6am and didn't get to work on anything until about 10am - too many people being entirely too needy :P
Working on the solos now, and decided to try doing them by sections rather than one long one start-to-finish. Makes it easier to separate parts I like from parts I could've done better.

Also got to use more features of the Switchblade 8, like turning on the Outputs to only certain preamps and leaving their individual channels in the mixer on. Before, I had it set to run to all 8 Outputs at once, and then would just turn the channel volumes of the ones I wasn't using for each section down, but that resulted in inconsistent volumes and somewhat inconsistent tones between sections that used the same two preamps. Now I can just switch back and forth between my two solo tones by changing one preset

Still have a few I have to go back and redo - part of the problem (for me) of doing them by sections as opposed to one continuous solo is that I lose the momentum when I have to stop, disarm the current track, arm the next track, change tones, and set a lead-in point. It's just not something I'm used to doing. It's still easier than muting "bad" sections and punching in, which actually presents the same problem, but I don't have to track down the very fine points to make it a smooth edit.

Sounds great so far. Looking forward to hearing the solo - it seems to be crying out for something epic .

Here's what I got for solos. Still have a few minor things to tweak here and there.

I redid both rhythm tracks to get them a bit tighter, and removed some of the bass frequencies in them so the bass track and kick would stand out more.

That sounds awesome. I wish I could play or write like that.
Hope you don't mind, but I've a couple of thoughts that, in my purely subjective opinion, I think would make it better.
When I first heard the lead come in, I thought it sounded great. My feeling is, though, by about 40s in, you should stop for a bit and let the rhythm speak for itself - it's really strong (listening back to the version you originally posted without the lead, it still sounds really good). I like the way you build up to the solo at 1.20 or so, but I'd transplant the bit you did between 40-50s somewhere after here. I think that bit sound stronger than some of the later solo. Personally, I'd also like to hear more breaks in the fast runs, just bits where you leave notes hanging and create a bit more tension. But, yeah, I really like it .

Dig it, it's got a lot of potential with a good vocal line too.

Thanks guys. I'm writing lyrics for it, but as it stands now, it's an instrumental. Given that, it's gotta have crappy solos all over it
