  • The Pod XT Challenge

I'm having some serious trouble getting an even remotely decent higain recording sound out of my Pod XT Live with the metal model pack, so I was wondering if any of you guys have had any luck? There's too much shit to tweak so by the time I've tweaked a patch my ears are toast and it turns out the patch I started with sounds better, but still awful...

So let's hear those Pod XT high gain mp3s boys!

    Re: The Pod XT Challenge

I have a PODxt w/the Model Packs. I've had good luck with the Diezel and 5150 patches, along with my EMG 85. I don't know about the PODxt Live, but the Line6 Edit tool makes tweaking a lot more user-friendly on the PODxt. I'll try to post a tune soon...

I can't really help you with designing patches, but I have a website that would probably be able to get you some pretty good high gain patches that would be a great starting point. Also there are a lot of knowledgeable people on the forum there that will help you out with creating good patches. I'll post the link from my home computer tonight.

There's the page I was talking about earlier... Specifically the "GORILLA'S Patches" section. He just did 2 Megadeth patches that sounded pretty damn good.

                Re: The Pod XT Challenge

This instituteofnoise.com site looks pretty cool, the samples sound good but theres only one or two high gain rhythm samples and I don't like either of em...

I've been to that Gorilla forum before, he does a good job of copying the sounds you hear on those CDs but none of them are GOOD sounds to my ears, I dunno like he does a sound that sounds exactly like a Suffocation CD but Suffocation's album tone isn't that great at all...

Maybe I'm just too picky....or maybe I should buy something designed to sound good instead of designed to sound like something else...

Dumpy, we should start from the top then. What kind of sound are you going for? What band? What guitarist? What kind of amp does that guitarist use? How about pickups?

What Model Pack patches have you been tweaking?

It could be that the POD XT is just not for you, DW. I thought that the VAMP clip you posted sounded pretty damn good. Go with what sounds good!

                        Re: The Pod XT Challenge

I'm more or less trying to get the same sound I get out my V-Amp through the POD, maybe a little bit more articulation...

The best sound I can get is the Uberschall model with the drive set to like 3 with a Tubescreamer model in front of it...It sounds pretty good using the stack poweramp setting into the FX return of my Peavey Supreme head, but direct it sounds awful. The best cabinet I found for it was the Brti 4x12 V30 with either the 421 or one of the 57 models on it, can't remember which...

The sounds I dream of are the tone Mike from Severed Savior has and Matt from Decrepit Birth...Mike is using an ENGL E570 preamp into a VHT 2:90:2 last I checked and Matt is using an old Digitech GSP 21 Legend into a Sonic Maximizer, external EQ and solid state power amp. Neither of those sounds have actually been recorded on CD however...If you go to Decrepit Birth's forum at smnnews.com/board you can find jam room videos where the guitar sound is PERFECT in my ears...

I'm thinking of picking up a Digitech 2101 because a lot of dudes use/used those and get good tones, I've never seen anyone use a Pod XT in the bands I like though...

                          Re: The Pod XT Challenge

dumpy my old china, get a Digitech 2101/2112/2120 preamp as there overdriven tones are killer.I have mates who use every model and all of them have fn sweet phatt tone-there isnt a bad model-I have the latest version they did(the 2120 artist model)and it has replaced my podpro for modern rock tones-My only fault in the unit is it always seems to have a slight chorus when using both ouputs(have been told by a studio dog this is the norm as it has slight delay built in)and the noise gate is fucking harsh!!lol. Its the only preamp i have had where i have had to edit factory patches to get a note to sustain naturaly!but with a lil tinkering about i came up with a suitable patch to play.
its tubes sound great!I have been told the 2101 is the best version then the 2112 and last the 2120.Later versions had more processing power but it coloured the tone(unless like me you dont use harldy ant fx)-In fact the 2120 has piss poor harware outputs compared to other preamps with bal xlrs/ect-the orignal model was built better and can be bought very cheaply(like them all)

                            Re: The Pod XT Challenge

I'm actually grabbin a 2101 Limited Edition model next week! Should be killer! I want to stay away from the 2112 and 2120 because I have a Johnson Millenium head and the preamp section of that is supposed to be identical to those and I can't get it to sound the way I want, but I think the distortion sounds are different, just the effects section is the same...Either way, goin' with the 2101 and hopefully it'll do me well!

Cool, I'm sure you'll be very happy with the Digitech 2101. A lot of the California extreme metal guitar players used those at one time or another. Lots of tonal versitility in that unit! Assuming that you're going to be using it for a live setup, what power amp are you pairing it with?
