Bought a Rockman Distortion Generator 1/2 rack gizmo this weekend, plugged it into my Pod XT Live, turned the amp emulation off and went direct to my PC with it. Actually copped a decent 'Boston' tone I thought. It has some interesting little tweaks - the EQ is pre distortion and a three band, it has a control to add harmonics and one to add sustain in different step. Treble boost post distortion, auto cln (which allows your guitar to clean up when you roll down your volume without affecting volume) and phase notcher, which emulates a wah being on and cracked half way open. The phase notcher was the key to doing harmonies - when I'd do a two guitar thing, one guitar would have the phase notcher on and it gave each their own 'space'.
I didn't really spend a lot of time tweaking or learning the song - a band I was in did it back in the late 80s. So if it's off here and there, deal with it. I was just trying to see if the ol' Rockman was a piece of crap or not. It's actually pretty cool for getting that type of tone. At some points there are five guitars going at once. Oh, and the backing track was a converted midi I got off the net. Drums sound awful, but hey, it beats what I could do.
