• 2nd try mix w/new KRKs

http://mothrastewart.com/audio/KRKmix2.mp3

Changes I made:

1) drums up, bass down a hair, background acoustics same level, lead guitar down a notch, centered it, and took some of the high end 'hair' off of it. Backwards wah guitar on the intro is slowly panned back and forth.

I didn't compress/limit the mix like the other one, so it's not as loud. Also didn't do a fade out, just let it end like it did when I recorded it.

Better?

better, but the analogy of a good recording playing in the background on a stereo while you're laying your lead track over it is still kinda valid. the drums and bass are up a little too much, at least on my computer, that's how it sounds to my ears. it's either that or maybe it's that the backing tracks are "fuller" than the solo track?

i'm no engineer, that's for sure.

Thats the way it sounds to me. Maybe layering the lead track would fill it up some more .-Lou

I'd say just boost the volume on the solo track and the acoustics.

The snare should go down a bit, because it's the most prominent thing in the mix.

The opening toms sound great, as do the rest of the drums (just the snare is a bit loud).

Try this:
-Snare down 2 numbers except in the fills/rolls (maybe down just 1 number for those)
-Solo up 3 numbers
-Acoustics up 3 numbers
-Intro rhythm guitar alternating left and right on each pass, or a lower-volume reverb/delay on that part which only sounds in one side the first time, then the other for thenext bar, and back and forth like that until the acoustics come in, with the main (dry) rhythm centered like it is now.

I'd also do muted "chinka"s using that opening rhythm tone throughout the song following the kick drum or the main bass line (leaning towards bass line, but not following the exact runs and such - maybe just on the 3 and 4).

Can you post the individual tracks as mp3s? I'd like to play around with engineering other people's stuff. PM me if you'd rather keep it private.

I like the first mix (wma) better, minus the huge effect on the intro solo. Bass is nice and punchy and of course the playing is top notch.
I made a rock n roll sin when I tried giving in to make money, had to turn down low.

I liked the first mix better as well. I leave everything as it was on the first one and just drop the lead RCH or two.

+1

for some reason this did not come thru very well...not sure if that was the remix or something on my side. Really, I thought you weren't to far off on the initial version, just needed minor tweaks.
