• 18 watt Marshall clip

Here's the first clip of the Marshall I built.

http://www.mothrastewart.com/images/...8wattdemo2.mp3

Guitar was my 90s Charvel USA strat, pickups were switched around a bit. Generally either duncan vintage singles or a duncan hot rails humbucker in the bridge - I moved around a lot. During the solo I hit a stock TS7 tube screamer pedal with the volume maxed and gain and tone at 9 o'clock. Cab was an ADA splitstack 2x12 sealed w/50 watt Celestions, mics were an SM57 and a Cheapo MXL 991 condenser further back.

Comments? I may be modding the amp a little... it was LOUD AS HELL during this clip. I know there are clams, I was more worried about getting the different tones from manipulating the volume control and pickups and pick attack/angle during the clip. The entire clip is one channel, no overdubs. Only time I hit an overdrive was during the solo.

It does sound like it was loud as hell. That's a wonderful sound though! I really like the "spank" you have in in that blues tone.

That amp has a cool, lively tone. Nice and thick too. Actually, it kinda sounds like a low gain Boogie.

Thanks scuba steve! It's a hell of a lot harder to solo with than a boogie, that's for sure!

nice chime...very clean and compressed. Does this use both sides of the 12Ax7?

One input just gives you one side of the 12ax7, the other gives you both but in parallel. I really like this amp, and I'm figuring out where to set an overdrive pedal to light it up for 80s style hard rock.

I'm liking the tone of that a lot, Pete. When are "production" versions gonna be avalable?
If I buy one, will I be able to play just like you?

Re: 18 watt Marshall clip

Hehe, I don't have the patience to really do a 'real' amp company. I'll probably just sell projects off here and there to make a few bucks for more parts and such.

I have too much fun building different stuff... but one thing I do dig about these 18 watt heads is that they have enough swat to gig with, and are a little loud for home use but easier on the ears than a 50 watt. I'm working up an attenuator circuit inside the amp to cut the levels back a bit.

here's a clip of the amp by itself with the gain maxed on the amp, just using a guitar to change the amount of drive. I also used a self built attenuator, but it screws with the tone too much imho:

BTW, the guitar is a Sully model... with two humbuckers. it's a really sharp firebird with an awesome spalted top and reverse strathead neck. Plays and sounds great - Sully was kind enough to let me check it out. I did the clip as a test/goofaround with the guitar and the amp.

Pete

EDIT: forgot to note, the higher gain stuff where I induce the pickups to scream is a modded Boss super overdrive.

Man...yeah, I'm liking that. Just a little more gain for my "fry" moods, which I can use a pedal for, really, and I'm good to go.
I'd need a little more gain and sag than you as I'm not where you are technique-wise. Think Mick Mars. With a bad headcold!

Nice work, Pete! Best yet, I think!

I've heard that Sully character is a mean guitar builder...

Edit: Ahh, ok. Just saw your edit!

Thanks for the kind words. Believe it or not, with the pedal it's pretty easy to solo with... the amp is real spongy feeling, it's not real tight and cold like a silverface fender. More Voxy.
