• First JSX clip

www.mothrastewart.com/newaudio/WSJpete1.mp3

Peavey Wolfgang patent pending standard into a JSX, 1x12 green cab I've been using with my 18 watt marshall. 50 watt celestion 'rocket' speaker, that still hasn't broken in, one SM57 into my PC. Added a little 'verb in the PC, otherwise it's unmolested.

First take/no overdubs/full o' clams, but what the heck. I did this for a harmony central jam.

Sounds very nice. Interesting choice for the backing track. Used to love that song.

That JSX sounds sweet... I'm sure the guy playing is helping that a bit too

You always come up with some cool licks in your improvs, nice job!

Thanks guys! The JSX has this really smooth tone - it reminds me a little of an ecstacy with the smoothness. The XXX has more of a harsh edge to it, imho. A buddy of mine that I get together with every now and then just sold his XTC, I was hoping that I'd get the chance to hear them against each other.

wow that sounds pretty f'n good! I may have to go back and "Re-check" out tht jsx combo I played around with.
sounds good Pete, and ya, that is an "interesting" choice to play over. I used to love that song too!
You need to go to http://guitarplanet.free.fr/index.htm and grab some satch backing tracks and record some satriani tunes so we can hear how those sound!

really cool Pete. I like that tone you had, kinda nasally, kinda marshally but not too brittle. great job

You got that sounding great Bro...As usual! (Love those improv sweeps...Don't remember ol Johny boy doing that )You almost make me want to play rock instead of metal when I hear this stuff and how awful would that be!

I forget the wonderful person who posted this link but, I found it quite valuable…Especially this "The Brown Sound by Cutting Down" article...I'll bet this works very well with the JSX. My XXX is still running 6l6's but this whole idea of turning the eq right down and cranking the pre and post vol to the max really turned this XXX o mine into a whole different machine.

When I first did this with I instantly started playing "What do you do for money honey" And thats not my usual. It just had that balls out driven tone you rockers speak of. The eq is reacts totally different this way...Give it a read...

PS Now I gotta get me some Sykes music.

Thanks man! I have a ton of satch backings, actually... I just did this one because we had a jam on HC where a guy posts a clip and everyone puts their versions up.

Thanks. I tend to prefer a lot of mids when I solo - it puts it 'front and center' and it just sounds better to my ear. I hate soloing with a scoopy sound. I think a lot of it though is the speaker I was playing through - I thought I'd try the 1x12 for the hell of it instead of a 2x12 or a 4x12. This amp sounds massive through my 4x12 Marshall.

Your playing is great as always. I am not digging the tone though. It sounds generic. Certainly nothing like the amps you built or the Vetta. It could be the cab although this is the 3rd JSX that I have heard that I didn't like. Its incredible how different it sounds compared to an XXX, 5150 or 6505.

Interesting. What was wrong with it - just an overall 'genericness' or ? I kinda dig that smooth midrange thing. Let me know what it lacks, it might be fun to try to dial it in on another clip.

Thanks for the honest appraisal of the tone - sometimes people are too nice on message boards. I don't mind criticism as long as it's honest.

Re: First JSX clip

I was thinking about tone the other day, wouldn't it be cool to have a tone thread where everyone would post clips of themselves with the tone flavors they like with the various amp/guitar/pickup?

For me I let my ears do the talking and do not put too much merit in what other people "say" about tone. We talk so much about tone but to me it would be super cool to back it up with clip examples...that way if joe blow goes on a 10 paragraph post on explaining why he thinks someones tone sucks and yet they can't get good tone themselves, I could skip over their posts Its all about forum reading efficiency people

For the record, this idea isnt brought on by anyone in this thread, just an idea I had for a while. I just thought it was appropriate after Pete saying what kind of tone he likes and that I think he came really close to getting on this clip.

The midrange sounds a little hollow to me and it is a little too dominant. (hollow and dominant... hmm...) Also, there isn't enough saturation (gain). The notes sound like you are almost forcing the sustain out and that its not occurring naturally. It could be that its just a little to articulate and clean to my ears. The other JSX's that I have heard sounded very similar. Its almost like you have to boost the mids and use midrange heavy speakers to get the amp to sound organic.
Here is another way I can put it. It sounds like if you dropped your pick you would be fucked. I know that sounds strange.
I would like to hear it a little more compressed (even) with a little more gain.
The basic tone is certainly a good platform to start with though.

I don't know, it had pul-lenty of gain, at least while I was playing - feedback was at will, I was across the room and the wife was watching tv downstairs (my guitar room is a loft above the living room, so literally it was recorded at 'tv' volume).

I'm going to probably do a 'crushing' LOL rhythm track with an ESP, it seems to have more output and evil power than the wolf standard does. stand by for clippage...
