  • I was listening to these again last night while my son, age four, was playing a video game. I cranked up Bill's Scapegoat tune and little eVan started headbanging like it was a good thing. He's my ears to the underground now, so I must agree with his assessment.

    • JIMMY...AWESOME lil' eVan..was diggin' my stuff..excellent..how he doing..good I guess..

Headbanging..when Vinny was 5..he was headbangin' in our bathroom to some metal I was playin'..and split his forhead wide open on the bathroom sink..scaring the shit out of Val and I..blood all over..pretty good gash..they just superglued it back together basically with a Q tip..hardly a scar there now..just a little one..

eVan..Uncle Bill Z Bub says never headbang by the bathroom sink!!

Yeah, Val and Emmy love Scapegoat, that's their favorite of them all..it would be nothing without Ty..when I first showed that riff to John..John was like.."You go to be joking".. because it's so simple..no, I wasn't joking..I wrote that especially for Ty.

He was in a band that was very "Technical"..basically he had to sing over and bunch of constant wankery..he was so sick of that shit..So I wanted to do something completely opposite..so "Scapegoat" was born.. it has some great hooks I think..

      I like it too!

Thanks dude..I remember hearing something you posted a while ago, and thought it was really good..I forgot what..I just remembered it was good.

Yes..I like to keep a VERY simple, familiar song structure..I was told with Protools I only half to play half the song really..they just cut and paste any part that repeats..as long as you nail good it to a click..that's awesome..saves time and money..cheating my ass..that's just economical..

I'm not going to layer a bunch of parts I can't duplicate live..so just two or three tracks for rythm/solos/ harmonies..I'm the only player.

I keep the structure very simple and straight foward ..I LOVE 4 minute songs..most people have ADD, including me..if you can't say what you need to say in approx 4 minutes..people lose interest, including me.

Prog bands..sometimes a intro could be 4 minutes..I'm done before they even start..well a lot of times

"Cheaply recorded" is a understatement...this is basically a glorified boombox tape..

I can't waite to hear these done RIGHT..all layered and polished..

          This Winter..that's the gameplan anywhoo..

            • BTW..I'll be recording this winter, hopefully..John Comprix ..Ripper's geetar playa is recording da shit, and I'll be using their Beyond Fear drummer..cool!

PROTOOLS baby..yeahhhhh..with a click track , triggers and everything!!!!

The trade off is ..he wants to use my bud Ty to sing on some stuff of his..that's fair ...

Tell me what song you prefer..I'm writing/arranging shit as we speak..I got older Arch Enemy-ish (harsh vox) kinda tune.. I wrote alot this crap a while ago..one that sounds kinda Testament/Coroner-ish (heavy clean vox)..then I got most of a black metal song goin' (fast and harsh)..that's it.

Even when we we mix it up it still like us..I think.

No "pretty" stuff tho I can't play the pretty stuff..I don't know how.

I think 7 songs and maybe a cover is a OK start..thinking a heavy version of "Rapid Fire"..I like that song.

and that says it all, you just get IT.
I love Scapegoat too the most, I think most of the people would, only other musicians wich are 2% of the whole people maybe like something else.
It's all about the hooks. I take good vocal melodies over constant wankery anytime. Ty can sing, so there's no need to overplay and whatnot.
I know it and you know it too.

Bill, unlike most of the modern metal songwriters you have completely different roots. You are oldschool. You have played song oriented music for a very long time. Van Halen is the best example. Also you have a funk and jazz backround.

You have a Pop musician mentality, that means you are about the song. No matter how much you try to be as heavy as possible you never get rid of that oldschool mentality. And that's a very good thing. No matter what style you play, the approach is always the same...to write good songs.

So you can make metal wich can be different from most of the bands. It's still very heavy shit but it has hooks, and good singing. So just do it. And use clean vocals as much ass possible. 99% of musically similar bands only do that dated cookie monster bullshit, with Ty you sound different and much cooler than the other bands. Anyone who says that you can't mix clean vocals and heavy music together is full of horseshit and doesn't know anything about how to arrange songs. Your music can prove that they are wrong.

So, metal with hooks and good vocals is an awsome idea. A lot of people including non-metalheads would like it.

Also, why not doing some funk slapping with bass, even just in a one song, who else is doing that in super heavy metal right now? It would be cool and different.

                    • yeah protools is fun Bill,i have been using the lite version for about 6 years now and its easy to get used too.I recently recorded a heavy original track for my band(the singer wrote the song as is a good guitarist too)with drum loops at 155bpm in the grid-using them basicly as a clik track but i find with real drums there you dig in more when you record the guitars
anyway the ryth gts.singing are all done so i binned the drums and burned a cd for my drummer so he can experiment with it.when he lays down the drums then all the guitars will change again..lol..but thats easy shit-press record and play, what could be fucking easier!well i have a pedal that i use for punch ins on the fly so thats even easier.going to record the guitars dry through my soldano preaamp and add wetness later and any Eq that could be needed when the project is ready for mixing.when you redo your shit post samples here and sell the fucking CD.i will paypal yahh right away

Yeah, man..E, you nailed it..pretty ironic that I don't really like "pop" music but I DO like the formula..it's familiar and comfy to most people..

I do like prog metal and epic stuff..but I'm a muscian..most non-musicians really don't care for alot of long winded wankery ..they just want to headband, dance, mosh, or just drive home..whatever..

In the middle of Father Felon..right before the solo..there is a tapped arpeggio progression on bass right before the "shrilly" solo comes in..that solo was recorded way too low of a level and was pushed into the red when mixing it..just to barely hear it...it's all distorted.

                          Thank E!!

Dude, Thank you VERY much..well I'm wrote one more song along those lines as far as "style"..

I love Ty's voice..he has weight in his vocals..he's not like the typical "opera man" 80's dude..like halford, tate, ray alder, midnight and such..I love those guys..but that wouldn't fit my writing that well..

He's got more of a Barlow, Aymar, Cornell ..even a Gillan thing going..very raspy.

                            I like that!

JJW..Dude, I can not waite to do this on protools..it's going to sound so much more "polished". I also can't waite to have the finished product in my hands..

Beyond Fear will be returning in a couple weeks from Europe..so I assume I'll start laying down stuff with their drummer right after the holidays..should be alot of fun

I'm recording the Bogner totally dry..yes, we'll add what it needs in the mix I guess..

I usually like some delay while soling for that "bouncy" feel and sustain..I may be able to do that thru the phones ..but remain dry into the board..
