    • yeah, that bass is kinda low in the mix, but still kicks ass, altho I like Scapegoat the most, Father Felon is a close second.

I think you are best at writing more groove oriented riffs, you know kinda like Pantera did, because you played funk bass for so long and that groove is just inside you, so that comes the most naturally outside of you.

btw. Imagine some of your songs with Louis Johnson style solo, that would be interesting

      • I must say,Bill, that I have listened to all of them twice now,and if I had to pick a fave it would be "Father Felon".

All of them kick major ass,and to limit them to the point they are at now would be a major disservice to metalheads everywhere.Get this shit out there, and if you ever gig out this way,I'll be there....

...E yeah..some "funk" would spruce things up a bit..hmmm I'll keep that in mind when I'm coming up with ideas..I heard lots funk sections in a very metal context..and it always grabs my attention..

Thanks Steve..yes, it would be a disservice to me ...that's for certain.

Cool..I got a new one that has the same kind of "vibe" as father felon..same vocal style and all..

maybe I'll throw a "funk" part in that one..why not!!

              • E.. I already have the part in mind that I'm using.

I always played it in my solo, just like the tapping run I do in Father Felon...Now I have a slapping part I could use too!!

Thanks E, in fact.. I wouldn't have thought of using it..until now.

As "Raw" as this demo sounds..I really like the songs and ideas myself..well if I didn't..I wouldn't have recorded them..I guess.

Ty is my secret weapon..I wouldn't be doing this without him..BON is the first time he ever sang "dirty"..so we do bring out the best in each other..we are like a Metal version of Tenacious D..

I'd play with Ripper for name recognition only to be completely honest, he's very good..but I prefer Ty's voice and writing style myself..

                • Guys,..Keep in mind that this "demo tape" is just pre-production ideas..I have many harmonies, solos and layered vocal lines all worked out..so I'll be ready to go in the studio and not waste valuable time..

This is just a a live basement demo..I did it for a local metal DJ that was houding me..he wanted anyhthing..even a boombox practice tape, he's a big fan of Ty..so do NOT take this too serious..this is far from thr final product..just a "blue print" for the actual songs ..

I can't waite to really do this right..it's going to kick major ass..I promise!!

Thank you VERY much for your input..you guys know what you like, and kick ass yourselves..so you opinions/critique is really important to me..

                  Thanks again,

                  • don't use harmonies, everyone is doing it these days, overused piece of shit, you have your own sound, use that.

I'm only going to do a couple E..I discovered that I'm partial to 4ths..I played with 3rds, 4ths, 5ths, and octaves..4ths is the ticket.

I'm the only geetar player so if I ever play live..I want it to sound just like the recording...so less is more..

                      For example..

I was sitting with Glen Drover at the first BW&BK show and Archetype..a local prog metal band was just going on..their cd sounds pretty damn good..LOTS of tracks..about a dozen vocal tracks..and a dozen guitar tracks..I told Glen.."Hey, these guys are one of the better bands in Cleveland"..so I perked his intrest..

So here they come..three fuggin' puds who proceeded to make a complet ass of me..I mean it was BAD..I mean very BAD..a total abortion..Glen looked at me like I was nuts..I had to back pedal and explain that I never saw them live but their cd sounds NOTHING like this..and they are signed to LMB records which is a great metal label..I felt like a total dickhead..but I think I made it quite clear..we were both in complete agony thru their entire set..arggggggh.

As soon as Beyond Fear come back from their European tour with Ripper..I'm going to start laying this shit down with their drummer with protools..This should be great..Ty and I were talking about it last night..

I am doing my very first "COVER".."Rapid Fire" by Judas Preist"..and I'll ask Ripper if he wants to do some guest shit on that one..that would be cool and I know people would be into that..that's one of my very favorite JP tunes..

Ty prolly will be doing some vocals with Tim's guitarist John Comprix..he really wants to do some "heavier" material and loves Ty's voice and wants to use him..so I figure one hand washes the other..why not..it's really great that John offered to record us and all..he's pretty jazzed about our shit which makes me very happy..

Tim actually wrote most of the Beyond Fear stuff.. guitar and all..that explains it..John really don't play like that.

Fuck, I'd be more than happy to open for those guys anytime!!

                      • do harmonies if you want to do harmonies.

Plenty of groups use vocal harmonies, they don't all sound like Manhattan Transfer or The Eagles. Hell, Nevermore occasionally use vocal harmonies, and of course, Jeff likes to thrown in some harmony guitars from time to time too. I don't think anyone is about to say that Nevermore sound like Iron Maiden.

                        • G wer'e gonna do harmononies..especially with the vocals..Mink ya ..Ty wents nut with two tracks on "Scapegoat" on that was on a fisher Price Tape Recorder..

Waite..you waite 'till shit comes out..it's gonna blow the ass outta you guys..

Here's my problems with most fuggin' guitar players with their heads up their asses..they can play all the fuggin' modes..the pentacostle scales..but they can't write a fuckin' four minute ditty to save their fuggin' lives..

Just 15 minutes of meedley meedley meeee..look at fuggin' mee.chasing my fuggin' tail...fuck you!!

This is true..I know guys around here that would give YJM a run for his money, but who gives a fuck anyways if they can't write their fuggin' name without fuggin' it all up..to ME..They're NUTHINS'..!!

                          Here's an Idea, write a fuggin' 4 minute ditty that's worth half a shit...that's what I think!!

Metal has to make retarded kids kill each other in a pit..If I can't do that..then I failed!

Another thing, we ALL know there's is awesome bands/players out there we all know and love..but if you want to be "original"..step away from the cd player and the video tapes..unless you wanna be a "paint by numbers" Heavy Metal Parakeet..

Look at me mom I'm sweeping..yeah, that's nice.. when your done sweeping ..now you can mop the fuggin' floor.

That's all good, it's a bag of laughs ..but if you want to REALLY impress ME..write something..ummmm.."good"..and play that shit!

                          • I love vocal harmonies, you know I'm a huge Beatles fan but guitar harmonies..... well 99,999999% of them are so fucking gay and booring. I do love Skynyrd, Thin Lizzy, Ratt, Queensryche and the amazing Brian May but that's pretty much it.

It's like if you start a metal band these days then you HAVE to do that crap. Everyone is repeading the same shit all over again.

                            • E what I do is very different..I mean just look at the examples I posted..one song sounds NOTHING like the other in any way, shape or form..but it does sound like the same band..I like that and want to continue this..

I hear you man, harmonies are necessary as is solos IF the song calls for it..you gotta play for the song..picturing the whole song as a whole..

I LOVE shred and I can shred..but if a song don't call for it, I'm not doing it..

You know that song Scapegoat..perfect example If I presented that song to most guitar players including my bro John..they thought it was a complete Joke..they just heard the riff and not the song..once John saw the fisished product he thought it was very good..

I wanted something very "simple" yet catchy and kick ass to showcase the talents of my singer..just like the Scorpians "Animal Magnatism"..nothing technical or hard there..but what a freaking killer tune...that's what I'm talking about.

So many player really over-think when writing..you just got to let shit flow when the inspiration hits you..naturally..then it just sounds right..

That's why we are glued at the hip...there is technically "better" players around here that ALL want him..but no way..he completely refuses. Because he is convinced after being around the scene as long as he has playing with and hearing everyone there is..he thinks I am the best song writter in town..PERIOD..these are his words..and well, how can I not be happy and honored, because that feeling is mutual..I think he is by far the best singer in town.

It's no "work" for us, it's FUN..."High speed death Roll" was written in 15 minutes with my kid when he was 8 years old...the intro solo to "Scapegoat"..was my second take and completely off the cuff..but it's perfect for the song.

He's got a cover band that covers what he like to sing, Coverdal, Dio, Cornell, Staley, even Paul Stanely, he loves him..and so on..so he's happy.

I'm his "creative" outlet..we wished he had more time from work to invest into BON..but it's cool..I'm in no hurry really, actually the longer I waite..the more shit I come up with to present him..so that's cool.

I'm all about being original..I purposely strayed from learning other people's material note for note and that helped me cultivate my own identity..I'm influenced by so many..but I won't "copy" them..nor care to.

                              Rock on,

                              Bill Z

                              • I had the over-thinking problem too when I was younger, there's a riff and then you have to add some crazy lick and another one and maybe some drum fills and a bass solos, and then double everything with keyboards and acoustic guitars, make 5 part harmonies on top of it, different lead tracks for left and right and maybe even another rhythm track makes it cooler etc etc. etc But all that doesn't matter if the song idea is weak.

The tune is great if you play the main theme on a piano or acoustic guitar and it still sounds fucking awsome.
Adding ideas is cool, I mean I love when there is some acousting thing and you add certain melodies with cello or maybe a Hammond to it. But eveything has to be added tastefully. Music should have some space so every detail can "breathe". Overusing different elements and putting them on top of each other confuses a regular listener.

You understand how the stuff works bro.
