• In My Dreams - Give me your best and worst

Alright, here it is.

In My Dreams

Give it to me. I know there are few flubs and don't listen to the last 2 or 3 seconds but give me your comments. I am new to recording so hopefully this will pass muster.

Jack, I think it sounds pretty good and respectable myself. I would feel pretty good playing that out in that context.-Lou

Jack -
Pretty good as far as having the parts down. Just seems like you are not totally locked in with the drum or bass in spots... playing at the end of the beat in some areas, and on the "up" portion of the beat in others.
Overall though, same as Lou - I'd be comfortable playing that live..

The tempo feels wrong. The parts sound good but it just seems a little slow. The opening riff is dead on, though. Sounded just like Dokken for a second there.

Thanks everyone. I do have to work on my timing. But you should have heard it a year ago. It was really bad. I developed many bad habits when I first started playing and am paying for them now. I'll have to take a look at the tempo. The one thing I sense is the drums and bass are very mechanical.

Sounds great! It takes a while to get sync'd while recording, especially if your running the recorder while your trying to play at the same time. Sounds great, keep at it.

Re: In My Dreams - Give me your best and worst

Sounds like you've got the parts down. I would lower your gain a bit...it will actually give your tone a more percussive/less fuzzy character which will make it hit a bit harder.
This was one of the most difficult things for me to understand until I would record two tracks, one higher gain, one lower, and then compare the results. More gain does not equal heavier tone...it often "softens/smooths out the edges".

Now its time to overdub the solo!

All right everyone. Thanks for the tips and comments. Here is the intro with your suggestions worked in.

I double tracked the guitars and one is hard right the other hard left. I also turned down the gain. I am still getting some static but I could swear my levels were set well when I recorded each track.

Am I on the right track?

make sure you are not facing your monitor while traking - that is causing your "static".

Cool. What software you use to record that? How'd you program the drum track? Is the bass line programmed or recorded?

Re: In My Dreams - Give me your best and worst

The drums and bass were a MIDI file imported into a Fantom workstation. The MIDI file came from a Guitar Pro file. The guitar went into a Boss GS-10. Everything was recorded direct into a Boss BR1600.
