"I get good 80's/thrash/death/metal tones out of it. "
i don't....and btw, even the hyped engl blackmore doesn't hold a candle against a 5150...or even a good marshall

I've owned two 5150's and a 5150 II, two DSL 50's, a DSL 100 and a 2203X......none of them sound as good as my Powerball....thats why I still have a powerball and none of the peavey's or marshalls. I owned a ENGL Blackmore....I didnt like it. The only amps that I like as much or more than the powerball was the ENGL SE and the Bogner Uberschall Revision Blue. I like the revision blue uber more than the Revision 1 Ubershchall.
it's all good man...i just couldn't get a decent sound out of any engl i've ever played and/or owned. whatever floats your boat
Its a V1. I've never played a V2. The V2 supposedly cuts thru better and has a better noise gate.....but I've never had problems cutting thru with my V1 and I use a Hush in my rack so I never use the built in gate.

isnt' the built in gate hardwired and therefore always on?

I dont know. If I turn it all the way down (off) it doesnt gate anything....but I guess its still 'on' since there is no click or swith or anything to indicate it as on or off.
