  • New clip with B-52 and the Hotplate

I cranked this sucker up tonight and brought it down to -12db.
Went for some VH figured what the fuck why not
used my GMW, the backing track got a little boomy on me in the middle
and the end was kind of screwy so I just faded out at the acapella part.

Used my GMW and the Marshall cab, no effects except for a splash of reverb in the mix.
Tell me what you think of the sound of this amp.
    thanks
    Nick

thanks but what do you think of the sound of the amp?
I was going to try this with my 5150 , but I ended up just plugging into this and fooling around with settings a little.
I don't think it sounds too far off.

Awesome playing! I think your levels were a little too hot, because I was getting some real bad digital artifacts. Turn everything down in your mix. I can tell it sounds great, but the unwanted distortion makes it hard to listen to.

Amp sounds ok, a little muddy, less gain and a bit of treble or presence (or even moving the mic a bit) would make a huge difference. You may have been getting some powertube distortion on top of gobs of preamp gain, which loses clarity. Just my opinion, overall it rocked! Nice job.

Just read your reply to the other guy. It doesn't have that 'sponginess' that VH stuff has. It's too tight and too gainy, not gritty/crunchy enough on the mids either. A friend of mine on harmony central did a damn near PERFECT eruption tone, using a cranked univalve. Those aren't high gain amps, and Eddie didn't use as much gain as you'd think.

be happy, I know guys who can get Eddie's tone and can't play his stuff nearly as well as you can.

Cool thanks Pete, I think it's the BT causing the Distortion for some reason in the mixdown the level went way up on it. I will try to fix that.
Actually when I play VH thru my 5150 I run the pregain on 3, the gain on this B-52 was up at around 2:00 a little too hot for this stuff I guess.

Don't get me wrong - it sounds fine. But if you're chasing Eddie's sound, he didn't really use as much gain as you'd think. When you really have an amp crazy loud, you can get away with that more. I always cringe when I do VH clips with my modelling amps, because I have to have a lot of gain to smooth it out - can't rely on sheer volume to help.

Amp sounds kinda brittle in the clip, but that might just be the recording. Gotta say--you play that a bit better than I do!

Playing is definitely great, but it is hard to hear the tone because the recording is clipping too much.

Very true that VH didn't use alot of gain. Dig up some of the original VH boots, and you'll be surprised.

thanks guys, the levels came out hot during the mixdown (I don't know why though )

When I had it running wide open it didn't sound so gainy (I wonder if the hotplates compression did that?)
I just got this thing so lots of experimenting to do
I love playing this tune, my all time favorite VH tune.

Great playing, and better tone than I expected to hear from that amp. You'll figure out the problem with your mixdowns, I'm sure. It sounds like pretty much everything is clipping all over the place.
