I am positive that Reb Beach wasn't so humble in the beginning.
I can compare it to when they interview movie stars. They always say.. be humble, stay true to your craft, blah, blah, blah.. Thats easy to say after you are a zillionaire and have already made it. Actors trying to break into show business are ruthless killers in the beginning.
At least one I can think of that was the worst case would be Jennifer Garner, she was a sweetheart to me and my co-workers in her earlier days, but after Alias got huge she was being a total bitch to us. She developed a nasty little sneer and pompous attitude , like she was the only bitch walking the earth.
I just have never seen it the other way around, where someone comes into this business being cocky...
Go to a headline rock show and talk to the warm up bands lead guitar player who drove 2000 miles in a van and a Uhaul to play a 30 minute set at 7:00pm for hardly anybody just so that they can be on the bill.
I can assure you that he is not humble.
What he is... is HUNGRY.
You just don't get it Evol. I been there and done that. I never made it. I went through the entire process and came so close so many times. I'm not bullshitting. I'm just telling it like it is.
Spare me.
None of it , NONE gives you or anyone the right to discourage a fellow musician. I don't give a shit if you're the baddest guitar player on the planet wielding your mighty "chops" and sacrificing virgins with your headstock... you SUCK for discouraging someone who posts here in that manner...the dude wasn't saying "Im so awesome, hear my shit and fear my playing" ...I mean ok, if that would have been the case then sure, people like that (hmm) deserve to be knocked down a peg or ten.
Thats hunger bro. All players have it when they are trying to get signed.
I would NEVER ever put down someone who's developing their skills as a musician...there's no reason to do so, unless you're trying to make yourself look good, but that backfires when you get called out on it.
And ,oh let's see about the last month or so , I've seen you in threads putting down
1) at least one legendary professional musician
2) a 13 year old girl who played her own little version of a tribute to Randy
3) a new member here, who made a friendly little post with a sound clip
Get off your high horse already, it's getting old. Everyone here is a guitar player, we're nothing special. We're a part of a band, generally who plays SONGS ... your "chops" don't mean shit, they don't give you any special right to say things about others, nor put them down than anyone else.
Oh,and next time your at a concert where the "killer lead guitar player" is doing some wank-off solo (if you can find one nowadays)....try this...
Watch what happens to the crowd during said solo. About the only people you will see left in the seats are the guitar players, the hardcore guitar fans, and people too drunk to get up to go to the bathroom,so instead they just stand there and pee down their leg.

Is that right? Hmm,after working in the movie business in Hollywood for the last 7-8 years until this year,I would say that is simply not been my experience. If anything I have noticed the opposite...they tend to be very meek and calm in the beginning, then get the big heads later...

I'm sorry to have to tell you ,that's a load of crap. I know, and fuck it ,I'll even include myself even though I've been in signed bands, PLENTY of players that aren't cocky ,arrogant pricks.....before and after getting signed. It's not the instrument,it's not the industry, it's the personality of the player, pure and simple.

I am off of my high horse. I won't be around the JCF much anymore. The majority of the guitar players on the JCF are metal players. Chops is EVERYTHING to a metal soloist. If you don't have chops you can't even play that 3 note solo with any feeling.
It all starts with chops. Chops.. chops.. chops.
There are alot of great players here and alot of great informative dudes. The problem I have lately is all the never was's who talk a good game but have never done shit and will never do shit.
Book smart guitar players. Bleh... yuk... fuggin ponderous.
I find myself arguing with guys who read too many guitar player magazines while sitting on their beds next to their full stack amps and their 20 killer guitars. Thats right.. discussing (and eventually arguing) about tone and volume and wireless rigs and comfortable bevels with dudes who have never even played in front of anybody or did any studio work or toured for years in a metal band.
How come when Bill (Horns666) talks about ripping your fukking head off with his Ubershall its all good but when I tell you that you should strive to be a killer monster of a soloist I get bashed?
My guess is that you guys don't know me.. you don't know what I have accomplished and you don't know that I actually do care about alot of the JCF members and most of my posts are meant to be helpful. After all... I have been through just about everything in the music business.
In metal.. you have to have an attitude. Its what sets you apart from all the other wankers.
And another thing.. get used to being called a wanker. Thats a compliment.
And another thing... Evol mentioned that nobody at the club or bar really gives a shit about the soloist. Fukking wrong on every level bros.
Here is what he said:
Watch what happens to the crowd during said solo. About the only people you will see left in the seats are the guitar players, the hardcore guitar fans, and people too drunk to get up to go to the bathroom,so instead they just stand there and pee down their leg.
Maybe thats what happens when you play a solo but it has NEVER happened to me or any other soloist that I know with chops and attitude.
My lead guitar playing bros... maybe some of you have gigged.. or gigged alot.. or gig alot.. or want to gig alot...etc... so this next statement is for you.
Don't listen to all this humble bullshit that will just put you in the mediocre play it safe group. Sure.. you can be nice to other musicians and the fans. I have always gone out of my way to be nice to other musicians before a gig or in between sets. Especially if there is a great player in the mix. Thats when I become a sponge and go into learn mode.
BUT... when its your time to turn it up... do just that. Leave nothing on the table. Imagine that every solo you play is being listened to by a record producer who is ready to sign the next great band or individual player. When you rip a solo... put everything you have into it. Put attitude into it. Make sure that you stand out during the solo parts in a song.
People remember lead guitar players who have chops and attitude.
If you want to be a nice guy all the time.. join a wedding band.
The reason I ranted on this thread is because this so called teacher posted a clip of an improvised solo over a canned track so that his students can listen to it and learn from it. I cry... BULLSHIT. The playing sucked. Then.. Evol.... rips me a new ass because I bashed this "teachers" playing when he didn't even hear the track!
Thats like those friggin left wingers bashing the lyrics of a metal song when they actually never even heard the track.
Then.. we have a member posting a Youtube video of a 13 year old female soloist and we get the same old saps reponding on how great she is and at the same time they are bashing Ace Frehely or Yngwie Malmsteen because Ace is too basic and Yngwie is too repetitive.
It almost feels like I am in the Twilight Zone.
BTW.. I still love most of you guys.

The guy posted a track with a very humble tone, and you ripped into him pretty hard. It was uncalled for IMO as well. Giving advice is one thing ("work a little bit on your bends", "I liked that part but the technique wasn't all that clean... you should work on that"), but basically telling the guy he sucks and should give up teaching "If you are a teacher you need to hit the books bro. Sorry..." is pretty uncool. Sorry that he isn't skilled enough to be a teacher in your book.
Not to be a dick, but how would you like it if someone told you that the advice that you give here is nonsense because you have never "made it"? Or if we ripped into you because you blew the chances you supposedly had? How about if we said your band will NEVER go anywhere for this reason or that? I'll bet you'd be pretty bummed.Last edited by khabibissell; 07-07-2007, 10:19 PM.

Dude, you gotta remember... being a teacher doesn't require you to be a virtuoso. Beginners that didn't don't even know how to hold a guitar for example can learn from someone of modest skill level. As you progress, you find a better one... see how that works?
You are a very competitive dude. I can appreciate that. But alot of guys here are just part time hobbists that come here because they dig Jackson guitars and like to shoot the shit about them. This isn't cut throat guitar wars dot com...

EVERY concert I have been to people get up and are leave to do whatever. YOU might not notice this because you are a guitar player and most likely paying attention to the soloist. I get bored personally, I think I've heard and seen it all at this point and am just not wowed anymore, so I look about to see what's going on. Oh,and you can meet some pretty cool chicks during this time too, simply go hang out close to the restrooms and they'll come up to ya and start talking, works like a charm for me.
The point is, it's music, you're part of a band, stop thinking your the fucking center of the universe just because you play leads.
Those days are long gone, the bulk of the crowd does NOT care about how many notes you can play....what they will remember...
OMG...

Don't listen to all this humble bullshit that will just put you in the mediocre play it safe group.
Jimi Hendrix - Probably the most down to earth humble guy ever to strap on a guitar. (and yes he banged your mom,and if you're anywhere around say 36-40 or so,he *might* be your dad)
Randy Rhoads ("I still haven't found my own style yet, that may take a couple more years")
Ace Frehley ("I love all the people that compare me to such great players of the time ,like Van Halen, but I feel that I'm just an average player")
SRV ("I feel extremely honored and fortunate to play on stage with Albert and B.B. King, true masters of their craft.")
...really belong in the play it safe group. I mean there's really no way those 4 could have been so influential and instrumental in changing music in any way shape or form, since these guys didn't put people down or anything like that now could it?????
Nah,those humble guys, they must really suck.
Please.
Sure.. you can be nice to other musicians and the fans.
I have always gone out of my way to be nice to other musicians before a gig or in between sets. Especially if there is a great player in the mix. Thats when I become a sponge and go into learn mode.

Chances are they're looking for a full unit that has some interesting MUSIC to produce , with good songs and the like...
Of course unless you're playing a showcase or something with some people from the industry there, this really doesn't matter.
So my advice here, is to say FUCK thinking about some record exec asshole, play what comes out of your heart for the song....FEEL the fucking music, don't worry about impressing anyone...because you know what? When you reach that point, that ultimate high of being one with the music, people WILL be impressed.
If you want to be a nice guy all the time.. join a wedding band.
That would be one wicked rendition of "Here comes the bride".

"So called teacher" - what in the fuck gives you the right to judge? Oh yah, your massive "chops", I almost forgot. Forgive me for forgetting but which rock star are you again?
I don't have to hear shit to know there is NO NEED to EVER talk to anyone in that manner, especially a new member of the community you're supposed to be a part of. Please.
Sounds to me like you are making alot of assumptions. And besides when the hell does studio work, or years of touring qualify anyone for judgements about tone and bevels and shit????? It's a fucking message board dude, as far as I know noone needs to meet some sort of rock star pre-requirement to talk or debate about such things.
That seems to be a theme with you, that noone has been in your shoes,(what a load of crap) so how dare they know something different.

Cuz Bill is being funny and not being a fucking douchebag asshole to people, and copping a "I'm better than thou" attitude. That's why.
Yes, because telling people they suck and discouraging them to post is really helpful to people.
Way to go.
Except a rock star perhaps?
Damn, there goes another peg.
Nothing wrong at all with attitude on the stage, or fire in your playing. What's wrong is this cock-sure put everyone down attitude in real life, towards people that's the problem.
Are you changing my words on purpose or are you really not reading them??? Maybe you need to re-read my post,I said a CONCERT, I never said a fucking club or bar, that's your words. Go to a concert....yes....and watch during the solo (if you can find anyone who does them anymore) ...you know , the jerk off part where the band leaves the stage and the guitar player whacks it around for like 10 minutes.
EVERY concert I have been to people get up and are leave to do whatever. YOU might not notice this because you are a guitar player and most likely paying attention to the soloist. I don't need to have my ego stroked by making my fucking band leave the stage for me to jack off onto the crowd by spewing a bunch of scale laden spunk upon them. Sorry, I've been asked to do them plenty, requests from the crowd, even the bands, but it's a matter of principle. It's about the music first and foremost, everything else is posturing.
Hmmm, then I guess all those bad ass players I've seen it happen to ,must not have chops and attitude,....but according to you they had to have it to make it to have made it and play arena's , so wow.....giant Catch-22 there....unbelievable.
Yah, please let's all go out and be assholes. Especially since all those more humble non-cocky guys like :
Jimi Hendrix - Probably the most down to earth humble guy ever to strap on a guitar. (and yes he banged your mom,and if you're anywhere around say 36-40 or so,he *might* be your dad)
Randy Rhoads ("I still haven't found my own style yet, that may take a couple more years")

Please.
Unless of course it's on a message board on the internet...or a pro guitarist, or a 13 year old girl playing tribute to RR....but other than them ,please be nice.
Really now? I thought that was a time to kill or be killed since you're in some sort of competition with the others...
I wonder how many bands nowadays get signed by producers looking for an awesome lead guitar player....
Chances are they're looking for a full unit that has some interesting MUSIC to produce , with good songs and the like...
Of course unless you're playing a showcase or something with some people from the industry there, this really doesn't matter.

Wow, just wow....or you could join Winger...I heard their guitar player is a nice guy, but I suppose he should be playing in a wedding band.
That would be one wicked rendition of "Here comes the bride".
You deserve to have your ass ripped, I didn't have a chance to hear it since he pulled it and asked for the thread to be removed by the time I got to noticing it.
"So called teacher" - what in the fuck gives you the right to judge? Oh yah, your massive "chops", I almost forgot. Forgive me for forgetting but which rock star are you again?

She's great because she's a rarity, most likely one of a kind. I can say I've never ever seen another 13 year old girl who seems to love RR so much as to incorporate elements of his style, and what looks like such joy from playing. I would much rather see that than someone with a "kill or be killed" shitty, cocky, jaded attitude.
Again.. to respond to the original thread.. this guy claimed he was a guitar teacher and posted a clip of a solo piece he did for his students.
I ripped it because it sucked. If he didn't claim to be a teacher I wouldn't have said shit. Guitar teachers are supposed to be really good players, especially if they are teaching soloing techniques or are you going to debate me on that one too?

Again.. nice way to avoid it all.
In your opinion it sucked you keep saying, yet noone else will know now because you discouraged the guy. Nothing, not your "awesome chops" , nor you "vast experience in the music business, that noone could possibly have" gives you the right to be such a dick to a member posting a friendly message on a board.
When the hell do all guitar teachers have to fit into your view or opinion of what sucks?
Maybe try some friendly advice if you don't want to get a new ass ripped.
You just keep making excuses justifying being an asshole, and not just here but in all the other threads where you've been pulling this rock star "holier than thou" bullshit.
The little 13 year old girl wasn't a teacher, nor claiming to be ... yet you ripped on her. So spare us all the fucking "rock star" act, please.

Anyway... Evol.. you don't know crap about playing guitar.. and I don't know crap about being humble to other guitar players who claim they are teachers but play like 1st year students. I didn't realize that you couldn't tell the difference between good playing and a beginner.
BTW.. can you tell the difference between a student driver and an experienced race car driver? My guess is yes.
How about a person learning to swim and an Olympic swimmer. My guess is yes.
How about a pro kick boxer and a normal shlub who just joined Tiger Shulman's last week? My guess is yes.
This guy was a beginner pretending to be a teacher. You didn't hear the clip so you don't know. I did.. and I do know.
That is why I bashed it.

Mmm hmm, there you go again saying shit like "pretending" .... YOU don't know... but I forgot you're the autority on all things guitar, because noone else could possibly have a different take on things than you.
Please, spare us all and go back to being a rock star know it all.
See you on the cover of Rolling Stone.
I'm waiting.....
Tell you what.. I won't even respond. I'll let others here respond to your playing ability.
BTW.. I am heard on the radio worldwide probably every hour of every day. Non of it is metal but...
I did much of the guitar work for:
Ben-E-King
Lloyd Price
Brenda Reed
Billy Ocean (I did the guitar track in Carribean Queen)
The Fat Boys
I got a call back for a second audition to replace Randy Rhoads for the Speak of the Devil tour. There were only 4 players in NYC that got call backs.
My band CAGE was on the short list to tour with Foreigner for the Juke Box Hero World Tour. I met with Bud Kreager who was their manager and tour manager and sat right next to the juke box that was on the cover of that album at his offive in Times Square.
My band Aftershock opened for Twisted Sister and Zebra for an entire year.
I gave guitar lessons in Port Chester NY for 5 years. There were many of my students that played in top bands around the area. The other teacher in my area that had alot of great players was Chris Risola from Steelheart.
BTW.. Mike Matijevic was the first lead singer in my HS band.
My cousin Gina who is also a singer/songwriter performs in NYC and used to date Ace Frehely. Yea.. alot of my family is musical. My dad plays piano, all my cousins play along with my sister. My 2 daughters play violin and one of them is going to the New Haven School for the Arts for singing in he Junior year.
I won almost every guitarmeggedon in the tri-state area back in the 80's.
People I haven't seen for 30 years still call me Johnny Guitar and they always do one of those air guitar gestures when they see me.
I played at Lincoln Center in NYC when I was 10. I was a classical pianist and performed 21 pages of Moonlight Sonata by Bethoven. The interesting thing about it was I had only taken lessons for 6 months and played the entire piece flawlessly by ear.
My piano teacher Kramer Neuman was world renowned and gave me lessons for free. I did recitals for a few years as his child prodigy.
I have relative pitch that borders on perfect. Somedays it is.. somedays it isn't.
My band Aftershock gigged 3 times a week for almost 3 years. We played everywhere. The largest venue was a daytime concert at Pelham Bay Park in NY. We opened for Steeplechase, Anthrax and Zebra. There were approx 5000 people there.
I worked at Power Play Studios in Queens, NY as a co-producer and guitar tech. I layed down metal guitar tracks for almost every rap/disco/funk/pop band that came into that place. All I used at the time was a Shultz X100 Rockman plugged direct into the board.
I was in a very popular Beatles tribute band for 2 years. That was great fun and very challenging.
My current band Fools Faith has just released our 2nd CD entitled Undone. Our first release under the title Aftermath Natural Destruction got excellent reviews. This latest CD has also received excellent reviews.
MTV just shot our video for The American Idol Band Search contest and hopefully we will hear something from them.
Currently.. we are back in the studio writing material for our next CD. We have 4 songs just about finished and alot of great ideas. There are several labels interested in signing us but we are waiting for a deal that also includes a tour and merchandising.
Ok... I probably forgot a bunch of things but thats pretty much where I am coming from.
Your turn Evol........
Now stop breaking my stones. You have valid points. I am a bitter prick. I am also a straight shooter when it comes to playing an instrument. Sometimes..(many actually) I piss people off with my comments and critiques but I have been around the business for too long not to see through bullshit.
