• First effort of 2004

Well here's the latest attempt at something for your listening pleasure. A POD and an SL1 for most of it, and some other guitar for small bits here and there.

As always, critiques, comments, and so forth welcome.

Cool, I liked it! A bit of a Satriani vibe going there. Tones were good, but I thought they could use a little more treble in that mix. What did you use for drums?

Thanks guys! Jon: to post on online rock when you hit 'build website' you will see an option on that menu for 'upload', and it has a browse, so you can just find the file, click and it will upload to your account.

Treble: heh, usually with the pod it's thin and bright all the time. if it is darker this time, i'm not really sure what i did that would have caused it! Maybe I can equalize it a bit...did you mean the whole thing, or the lead parts?

edit: forgot: drums were fruity loops

First off, great tune! Very Satriani sounding to me. Not bad at all.

Now the critiquing. Your lead tracks sound fine to me. Nice and full, I wouldn't change a thing. The rhythm guitar does sound like it needs a bit of a treble and/or midrange boost, so it'll cut through the mix better without having to be turned up in the mix and possibly shadow the lead tracks.

Only other thing I'd suggest is at 0:55 into the song, the part sounds kind of empty with just the rhythm guitar pushing along. I'd like to hear some kind of sound effect or melody over that rhythm until the new section at 1:05. Not a big deal though, it is rocking.

Of course, this is only an MP3 which I'm listening to on my cheap computer speakers, so once its well mixed and played on a great sound system it'll sound fuckin great.

The solo guitar section with the clean guitars and drums at 1:25 is great, probably my favorite part of the song. Great work!

anyway...great job Mark...I really like it and think you did a really fine job...good playing..nice and melodic...dig the harmony too..I like the different moods...nice and fluid playing and you didnt go too far on with the shred or lose the sense of melody...great stuff man

Mixing is a whole different ballgame and everyone has diferent ears but I didn't find it too bad at all...good stuff man...put it this way...I don't usualy listen to most mp3's posted more than once...this one made thru twice already

I agree with Ninja, the playing is very good!

Mixing stuff on a computer is difficult and it's hard to get something that sounds perfect. Also, as great as the modeling stuff is, it's not quite as good as the real thing (miked amp and cab). I would love to hear you play that with "real" gear, because I think the nuances would come across alot better. It's obvious you know what you're doing.

Ninja: thanks! the emptyish sounding bit: I thought the same when I was recording it. Tried a few things but couldn't come up with anything that fit, so I just ended up leaving it as is.

Shawn: you know a thing or two about tone and playing, as everyone here knows, so thanks indeed for your opinion

Free: thanks bro, mighty kind of ya. Catch ya

                    Re: First effort of 2004

mixing was good, lead sounded good, didn't like the rthym too much. I also think the part from 0:55 - 1:05 was too boring. Great overall "kingish" feel. Like Luca Turilli or some other crazy fantasy metal.

Being dubbed a "Diseased Cock Smoocher" and given a special avatar of your very own, by the admins no less. Such priveleges!! I see the Denim Knight has obviously joined the hallowed "Friends and Fellows of the Forum Club". Well, ususally my recordings are just guitar and drums, but if I'd happened to have a mic and could've recorded the nuclear explosion of howling ROTF laughter when I saw that, admins, you'd have been proud!! One of the best ever...it has to be a Sully. (x500)

                        That is just too funny...

Another good one mark. I just got a pod XT from ralph and hope to start recording soon. It will be some time I am sure before I figure it all out
