Trying to get a good NEvermore Recorded sound

I tried this with my JSX and my Rectoverb today.
not thrilled with either take.
The Recto is a little fizzy (sounded fucking great in the room).
the JSX surprised me, doesn't sound half bad for this "genre"
these are just test takes so I'm not really focusing on the playing too much.

any recto guys here ? cn you help me out? how do I record this amp without going deaf?
it sounds so much better cranked than it does at lower volume it's really frustrating.

Wow Nick, that is the best A/B amp comparisons I've heard here so far!!

Both amps cover this ground very well. Some things are more "true to form" with the Recto. But most of the solo track was a tad more articulate with the JSX. The "fizz" is actually part of Jeff's sound..its just the nature of the beast. The recto sounded a little more aggressive with the palm muted stuff. The JSX easily covers this territory as well but sounds much more smoother..exactly how those amps sound IMO. Ironically Jeff used a Recto and a XXX, and the JSX is based off the XXX..so the similiarities will convey.

Reguardless, your probably your worst critique. You've come pretty fuggin' close nailing Jeff's tone and vibe..Try a BBE with the Peavey..maybe a sonic stomp. They match well with 5150's..I'd assume they may work with the JSX. If it does that may give it the "fizz" and bite that you hate but actually required for that tone.

My bud Clevo- John has this high end "hish" phobia. Whenever he attempts to keep that in check, it really kills alot of the freqs necessary for harmonics, squeals and bite. Everytime I touch his amp..I automatically go for the presence controls to get where I need to be.

Example..Everyone loves Ed classic tone. But really give the intro to Panama a good listen. There is ALOT of high end "hish" in that sound...but he needs that to make it work.

The only thing you're really missing is Andy Sneap..

why do you want to record with low volume?

there is a reason why amps are cranked when it comes to rock guitar recording... not only does the amp itself better but the most important thing is the speaker vibration... the speakers have to go insane... and usually the most vibrating mic is miced the most.
That's how you get massive guitar sounds.

Thanks Bill! I forgot Jeff was using XXX's , I thought Enemies was all dual Recto. I was using a sonic stomp but I end up selling it.
believe it or on the JSX clip I have the left channel on crunch with the gain 6 and the right channel on Ultra with the gain on 4
there's plenty of room to add in the fizz with gain and a boost.

Endrik I don't want to record at lower volumes but with a wife , a
daughter and neighbors, I don't really have that much of a choice.
I can only turn up the recto so loud before I start getting yelled at
It 's funny the JSX basically sounds pretty much the same at all volumes
(obviously the louder the better) but the tonality of the amp pretty much
stays the same.
The Rectos tone and overal sound structure changes dramatically as you turn it up or turn it down.
It's really "touchy".

Gotcha Nick. You don't have to tell me about how touchy Rectos are. We just never got along. I get along peachy with the JSX tho. I wonder how my Uber would sound with you. I've listened to these again..I gotta say, great job!

In related NM news. I loves Warrel's cd, and can't wait for Jeff's solo and NM DVD. By that time another NM cd and tour will be upon us!!

It doesn't get better than that for me.

tried this again tonight with my mids cut a bit and the amp really cranked with the gain way back.
I think I'm Getting closer ( I botched lead but it's much clearer)

That's definitely more in the ballpark! I'd say it still sounds a bit muddy to me. Do you have some sort of bass under there?

In the parts whenn only the guitar is audible, it sounds awesomely good, but it gets totally drowned in the mix in the other parts.

Ya I've got the tracks way too far down in the mix
there is bass with the drums.
I've been trying these clips with my Avatar cab loaded with C90's.
I've never recorded this cab before and it seems to be a lot more mic position sensitive than my Recto cab.

It might sound crappy in the room, but mid it up more. Especially at Bb your gonna need to turn down the bass (leave the resonance up though). And definitely put your boost in the chain, its compulsory really to get that middy crunch and attack.

Lately ive been recording the jsx out of the line out and adding impulses with voxengo boogex. Sounds good to me! Otherwise try another mic, almost anything will do to fill in the top end (aslong as you adhere to the phase issues).

The best way to record loud and not make the loved ones mad is to build an ISO box. You can build a heavy insulated box to set the cab and a mic in. There are companys that sell them too. Building one would be more fun IMHO. You can crank the amp and reduce the noise immensely. Good 3/4 in birch playwood and some sound absorbing material will work great. You can build a nice box for a 2x12 cab pretty reasonably. Im sure you can find plans online somewhere.

As far as the tone goes wellllllllll it sounds like de tuned MUD. I guess thats what they are going for though. There needs to be seperation between the bass guitar,drum and guitars. It sounds all mashed together in the mix IMHO. The playing is great!

That MUD tone is in the 250 hz range. try using a parametric EQ to get rid of it.
