• Triple XXX Clip

Hey everyone. As you might know, I just recently purchased a Peavey Triple XXX head. I know that demo clips aren't that easy to find on one these puppies, thats why recorded this.

My setup was very simple. I had my '89 650XL running straight into the amp, with a 7-band EQ running in the FX loop. The only tone altering affect that I set the EQ to was to flatten some of the fizzy high-end. The head was then ran into a Mesa Recto (V-30 loaded) cabinet in stereo, although only one speaker was mic'd. From there, a single SM57 plugged into my computers stock mic jack was recording into Cool Edit 2.0, which I then edited it, and coverted it to MP3. Enjoy, and exuse my hacking!

More will come, I promise! Since I'm on spring break, I'll have enough time to get one done. This time I'll focus more on my playing as this one was more of a getting to know my amp and CoolEdit 2.0 type thing. Thanks for the comments though!

Hey John~

Great Sound/tone. What settings are you using from left to right on your EQ? I am having difficulty getting that type of sound out of my XXX.

Brad,
These are updated settings and sound tighter and punchier, while still retaining the tone you hear on the recording, sorta

On the Crunch channel:

On amp (these are estimations as the XXX doesn't have numbers):

Hair: 7
Body: 5
Bottom: 7
Volume: -
Gain: 7

On my 7 band EQ in the FX loop:

6400Hz: -18dB
3200Hz: +9dB
1600Hz: 0db
800Hz: -5dB
400Hz: +2dB
200Hz: +4db
100Hz: +8dB
Level: +3db

Those should be decent starting points for you. From there, fool with it. I know that the active EQ on the amp is really sensitive, so even the slightest movement of the pot will alter the tone. The freq. of the caps on the amps EQ are interesting sounding to me, but EQ pedal takes care of what I like and don't like. Good luck, and don't give up on the amp, because like all good tube amps, it will take you sometime of fooling with it for you to make it sound how you want it; stick with it! Thanks Brad, Miffy, and everyone else!

Also, you should take advantage of the bias ajustment pot, and use it! Last weekend I took the back panel off, and ajusted my tubes to run alittle hotter (turning the knob counter clockwise), and what a difference! If you have the stock tubes, then I recommend setting the knob at about a tad higher then 9 o'clock. The amp really came alive. I guess Peavey sets the 6L6GC's a bit to cold for me. Just remeber never to dime on the control!
