    I tuned to drop b on my .9-42s. No problem.
    Is that a banana in your pants or are you just happy to see me?

      you may not need it, but doesnt a higher gauge give a tighter sound?

          I don't really think so.

          You CAN bash on heavier-gauge strings harder without having the pitch vary as much which is cool but "heavy" guitar doesn't necessarily imply hitting the strings really hard.

          With lots of distortion and a "modern" amp I don't think string gauge makes that much difference in the tone.

          Hell I had a couple of guitars with EMG "mid boost" circuits and it didn't even change the tone at the kind of gain levels I play at, it just gave it even more (sometimes too much) distortion.
