I have a Morley WAH-SP which is switchless, pretty similar to the "Bad Horsie" I think, it's ancient but still works, and I give it a good workout frequently.

I really like the switchless setup. Once you get used to it (which, for me, took about a day) it's really great not having to push it forward to kick it on/off or accidentally not turning it off.

My favorite thing to do with the wah is to just move it forward until it brightens the tone a bit and hold it there; there's kind of a "sweet spot" depending on where you're playing and how much you want to bring it out or pull it back. I don't do too much of the "flap the pedal back and forth" 70's stuff.

Can you point out some songs in particular?

I had an old Morley wah before switchless that you had to stomp the switch to engage the wah - so I'm really used to that action. I had a Snarling Dog that was a mash forward to switch on that I didn't mind at all. This one has a "wah lock" switch with a knob that lets you do exactly what you're talking about without using the rocker. Just set the knob to the freq range you want and kick on the switch. Pretty cool.

Sounds like he's using the wah on every song on In Trance (hehe, let's not compare him to Hammett please). I don't know if that's heavy enough for you, though or what kind of style you prefer. He's also using it on the solo in The Sails of Charon, which is probably as far from 'pentatonic stuff' as you can get in hard/heavy rock category. I think he's alternating back and forth between the phrygian dominant scale and the phrygian mode of the natural minor. I personally like his solo in the latter song a lot.

Sweet. I have one of the original Dragons that were signed by George. The best wah I've ever played.

I had to switch to the switchless b/c I could never tell when I engaged/disengaged while playing out!

Guitar solo starts at 2:08 or so if you want to skip the vocals. (You probably will...)

                  Cream - White Room

Very old school, back from the times when Clapton still had balls. But old school rules in my world. If you want to go the FX route, then Vai and IA Eklundh make lots of funny noises with that thing.
