I just picked up some Free stuff - I figured I like Dave Murray, and he's always cited Paul Kossoff, so might as well go to the source. Great stuff.

Shred is best IMO when combined with other elements musically - you gotta make sure you sound musical -
In addition to the fast playing you have to slow down too - mix it up and make your playing interesting.
Use various techniques, use various scales and combine them into interesting musical passages.
Don't play fast or shred all the time just some of the time.
Speed is one tool in the arsenal. Great but you need them all - you have to be melodic - I would put this as the most important skill to have. You have to understand musical connections on the fretboard. You have to figure out how and when to break the rules and how to get back "into the box" when you go "outside the box."
You should know how to substitute chords, how to throw in flat 5ths and all the rest of the stuff.
Then when the time comes to let her rip you just forget it all and let your fingers and ears do the walking so to speak and the rest will take care of itself. You will develop a sense of when to go fast and when to slow down and use all of the tools you have been working on. One day it all comes together but it takes many years.PLAY TILL U DIE !!!
