  • Urgent Help Regarding Restringing

Hey guys, while stringing my guitar the first string somehow tore from the top. Now it's not long enough to reach all the way to the tuning key for the first string but it is just about enough to put it into the sixth tuning key(which is closer to the nut). Can anyone tell if it will cause any problem if I wind the 1st string in the 6th tuning key and put the 6th string in the tuning key of the first?

    ...Yeah, don't do that. :P

So my life officially sucks now -_-. It's not the best of the feeling when you buy a new set of string and get it torn. I guess another 2 hours journey to get one string tomorrow :[ *sigh

It happens sometimes. That's one reason why I usually buy 3-4 packs of strings at a time, and also why I don't go for fancy coated strings (unless there's a fire sale).

Its always a good idea to carry singles of gauges you use or intend to use, definitely extras of those which are more inclined to break. Just make sure you put them in a place where you'll remember to find them.

Save money and buy them either bulk or by the 10-packs.

S.I.T. strings have an extra high E just for that reason, it's the most frequently "torn".

Always stock up on extra strings, and extra tubes during the feast to prepare for the famine.

I bought these expensive cryogenically frozen strings (I was a newbie and the shop owner convinced me) and I broke 3 of the 6 strings. I was so pissed off! I couldn't believe that I was that stupid. Cryogenically frozen strings?!

Anyway, stuff like this happens. Cygnusx1 S.I.T string suggestion is a good one, because of the extra high E. Good luck!

I have twisted the two ends together by making two interlocked loops using pliers before. Give it a shot, it might get you up and going again.

                    +1

Sounds crazy, but will work. Make sure to pull both ends of the knot tight to prevent slippage*(tuning wise). Very janky, but sometimes it's cool to be able to avoid driving a good distance or even worse the music store's closed.

EDIT ~ (for clarity) Basicly tie a slipknot, before tightened put anextra knot to prevent it slipping out. http://www.google.com/imgres?q=knots...,r:2,s:0,i:146

If it doesn't give you the pop up image, scroll down to the image of many knots and the bottom middle is what I'm trying to express. Will work on anything up to a 13 gauge. Cheers

Ah thanks guys, lesson learned. I'm already heading out to grab the string and then go off to practice but I will definitely try out the knot technique sometime just to see how it goes.

Gibson used to give you extra E and B's per pack in some of their sets. Musicians Friend and places that offer strings in bulk lots of singles like http://www.juststrings.com/plainstee...lkstrings.html are good stops when you dont want to travel.
Just plain strings will charge one rate for shipping (6.95 was mine) but I ordered about a dozen sets of 12 singles, so it made up for it.
