Metallic sound

Every time I listen to STP "Plush" I hear this metallic sound when he is muting and pausing while keeping time. Today I was listening to Hagar's "Heavy Metal" and a similar sound there too.
How are they getting that sound and what causes it? Is it muting & harmonics, fresh strings, and studio eq'ing?

I'm not familiar with the Hagar tune, but on Plush it sounds like he's just releasing the chord while strumming, combined with gain & a bit of light flanging

man, you need to pull that tune up on youtube or something, thats a classic pre VanHagar tune ! THough I wouldnt call it metal per se, more like basic good old fashioned rock,
