• Another Alternate Picking Question

I am trying to find out what is the proper alternate picking method for this lick. This seems like the proper way but doesn't follow a strict up down method.

This way is strict up down but doesn't feel right.

I have some bad alternate picking habits and am really trying to work on it. I came across this lick and am wondering which way is the 'correct' way to do it.

    Thanks

    Re: Another Alternate Picking Question

The first one is the "real" constant up/down patter. Those slides interrupt your picking pattern, just imagine they were picked notes - the first slide would be upstroked, the following note hence downstroked, the second slide would be downstroked, the following note hence upstroked etc
    I hope I make sense.

Thanks, that's the way I have been practicing it. I just got to the point where I wondered if the other approach was the proper technique.

      Thanks

same here.... working on developing "strict" alternate picking. The idea is to make your upstrokes and downstrokes completely equal, so that you can play any riff/lick starting either up or down.

try doing a few fast down-picked notes on the same strings (à la james hetfield) then try the same using only upstrokes.
