I'm having trouble keeping it consistant.... is the pick supposed to go up and down and up through the string or am i supposed to slightly do it????

when i do it slightly it kind of works when i try to go through the string it just doesn't work i get stuck....

    any help?

    Re: galloping

What do you mean "through the string"?

You know how to alternate pick one note on one string, right? It's nearly the same principle except you'd want to hit three notes and then skip the fourth.

      Re: galloping

Start practice your galloping on one string, just to get the rhythm down. Once you're feeling comfortable with it, you can start to incorporate 2- and 3-note chords. Keep a strict up-and-down motion with your picking hand, even on those beats that you're not hitting the string. It will help keep your picking consistent.

One way to get used to things is to start playing 8th notes, all with downstrokes. So you'll be playing this:

      --1------&------2------&---
      down...down...down...down..

Now introduce an upstroke between every other downstroke. Continuing to downstroke on the 8th notes, your picking will now be:

      ---1-------&-------2-------&-------3-------&-------4----
      down...down-up-down...down-up-down...down-up-down...etc.

Notice that in this instance, each gallop sequence ends on the beat and with a downstroke.
      Hail yesterday

I used to practice it by picking in a military snare drum rhythm.

and then the cheat comes in on the keyboards bloop blopp bloop bloop blopp bloop bloop.. and the dragon comes in the niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight! You caught me there stuka.. lmao

no really... Vitamin G had a good explanation... i'll try and express it this way, where a dash ( - ) represents a little pause

down - down up down - down up down - down up down - etc etc

theres many ways you can do it, up down up (ala iced earth riffs where you move to the lower strings after picking a higher string)

the possibilities are endless, i nthe end is ay always do what feels right for you
