• Stuck in the weirdest of ruts

So I try to play guitar in my new place here, but I get so sleepy every time I do it that I just can't play worth a hoot. Any ideas? I know I need to buy some posters and stuff to put on these white walls that I got but I don't know what could be causing this phenomenon!

I've experienced feeling drowsy when practicing also. I think it's the dim light in my basement as well as the lack of circulating air. Now I play standing up during the peaks of my circadian rhythm (biological clock) so that I can fully get into it.

Also, I pretend I'm playing to an audience... that sort of helps to give you some energy...

Try to really focus on a particular technique or song or whatever. If you just pick up your guitar blindly with no direction, you won't get as much out of it as if you had a definite goal or target to hit.

I think if you do that, regardless of your surroundings, you will get more into it.

But, that's just me....but you have nothing to lose by trying it.

Willie,

I had a similar thing happen when we moved into our house here 6 months ago.
The walls were so white and depressing! I would literally get droopy-eyed while playing. How boring.
I agree with LPC in having a goal and a focus, that will help. But you need inspiration as well.
The posters are a great idea, I think most of us have them slathered all over the walls.
A can of paint in a wickedly cool color is inexpensive. Candles and glow-in-the-dark stars on the ceiling are very fun. So are black lights!
Get your practice room spruced up and organized (organization is important), give your guitars a good clean and polish and see if that helps.
Good luck!

Em

i suffer from chronic depression so i know what you mean. it really hampers my practice and my ability to focus. they changed my medications a few months ago, so far it seems to help a lot.

What also helps for me is to watch a lot of instructional videos. Rusty Cooley, Joe Stump, Jani Liimatainen, Scott Henderson, Alexi Laiho, ..........
