Re: So is there such thing a Naturally Sucky?

I've been playing for 19 years and I can't play like half of these guys here can. Does that mean I suck, No as a matter of fact alot of the younger guys around here that can shred me into oblivion can't play the other3-4 minutes of the song as they never learned about timiing and chords anfundamental stuff.

One thing I will note and I think most of these guys will agree, I practiced for years by myself SITTING down. The when I went out to play live, it was a whole different ballgame

i dunno man, whoever said the thing about becoming a hermit (i think it was ninja)is prolly right, practice makes perfect and the more your practice being perfect the better i've been playing for 5 years, my fifth year being the most abrupt, but also the one i learned the most in, and in my opinion what makes a great guitarist is someone who knows how to compose, who knows what chord should go where, how the song should build up etc, not someone who goes 'alright today i'll pick any key, record a few chords and shred over it at 3 million bpm'...just my opinion, either way, you're better than you think, so being hard on yourself helps to a cetrain degree, but it shouldnt be in your mind to such an extent that it hinders your playing. Be happy in knowing you can create music using an instrument

Re: So is there such thing a Naturally Sucky?

I just thought of this suggestion: If you are playing a song, I assume you are playing along with the CD-if not, try that first. First time through, just play the rhythm parts. Second time through, play mainly th erhythm parts, throwing in a few of the "key" lead licks. Next time through, play more of the lead parts, less rhythm parts. Then next time, start out with the first few bars of the solo. So on and so on, until you find the right mix of the rhythm parts, lead licks, and solo parts. Now mind you, I have never tried this, but I think that it makes sense and if I was motivated and had the attention span to learn whole songs, I might go about ti this way.

Also, I agree with guitarsjb. Even if you are not as good as some other guitarists, you are way better than the non-guitarist. Remember how unnatural an open F chord seemed? Or trying to remember the difference between root 6 and root 5 barre chords? what about your pinky? I know mine was useless when I first started playing. Plus, just being able to strum a few chords impresses most chicks.

My experience with guys lately is "Naturally LazY"

Sometimes it does help me when I get stuck, to just put it sown for a little while and take abreak. Sometimes that is for a couple hours , sometimes a couple days

Okay, today I had a sucky practice day. I have discovered that when I am cold in my cold basement, I am TERRIBLE. My fingers feel like they're frozen. It's especially evident when I'm trying to play fast stuff or doing acoustic fingerstyle. Get the energy flowing and warm your whole body up... or at least warm your hands up by soaking them in warm water.

Me too. I dred practice in winter. Our band room is in a warehouse and is mega cold. We run a kerosene heater and an electric heater and it is still freezing. We don't do Van Halen in the winter. LOL!

I guess soaking my hands in warm water helps me to relieve what's in my bladder so that I can practice for four hours without stopping for a bathroom break. Seriously, there's nothing I hate more than the call of nature while I am practicing.

You guys should do a few laps around the warehouse and then rehearse.

I guess that glory hole in that toilet seat is big enough for Bill to feed his Dark Marsupial through... There should TOTALLY be a trem bar on that guitar... it should be the flush lever. Jazzman,

Thanks for asking about the Band, It's not going and I am finally starting to get to the point where I realized I did the right thing. I'm not a great player, but my talents are far above theirs ( as you have heard ) and not worth wasting on fools who don't know crap
