I have decided that I don't have the attention span to sit down and learn from books, so I was wondering if anyone had used the "metal method" videos, and could tell me if they are worth trying? I guess I am more of a visual learner....

Re: Doug Marks videos? Any good?
I haven't seen the JP DVD, but I am more interested in a lesson type format rather than one of the celebrity "how to play like me" types. Don't get em wrong, I have the old George Lynch video, and if my VCR hadn't crapped out on me I'd be watching it religiously. However, I live in a cultural vacuum/craphole of a town, and work two jobs. I think trying to find a local teacher who will give lessons at midnight might be tough to find. I figured something like this would be the best alternative. For some reason, I have a very difficult time sitting with a book and doing repetitive exercises. If I see it and hear it being done, I can probably do it better than just hoping it is right.

I learned from the Metal Method videos and I think they are great. It covers the material, gives you lots to work on by yourself and is very well structured. The only thing is that it's not like a teacher who can push you to keep learning, left to myself it took me almost a year and a half to do the six month program.
If you can stick to something like that and have the disipline then go for it.I swear, by my life and my love of it, that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine. - Ayn Rand

If you can learn or pick anything at all off of videos it's a good thing. Although, I've found that for me anyway when I took lessons ages ago, I have learned the most from one on one lessons with a good guitar instructor.

JP's vid is about those kind of exercices. You see some clips of him playing at shows, but he gives you exercices, not signature licks. You took too much, man. Too much. Too much.

I buy all of Doug Marks stuff. He is great and his products are priced so cheaply that even if you bought them as entertainment, you would be getting a good deal.............
I only wish I bought his stuff when I first started playing............

Re: Doug Marks videos? Any good?
See, I have been playing on and off for about 13 years. I originally started taking lessons and did the whole "mary had a little lamb" and "ode to joy" from a basic book. My teacher taught me how to form chords and some basic theory. And then he showed me how to learn basic songs by ear (which I still suck at). But then I quit the lessons after I got the basics. When I was in college, I took 3 semesters of guitar lessons from a Jazz player, and I picked up a few things, but was lost most of the time because his idea of "blues" was totally different than mine, plus i was more interested in hanging out with girls than sitting in my house and practicing jazz licks. So now that i am a grown up, I want to be able to do more than just learn songs from tab and jam in the pentatonic blues sscale. If there are any other suggestions, please feel free, but right now I leaning towards ordering the intermediate DVD's from him to check them out-it's only like 25 bucks, which is less than an hour of personal instruction.

Re: Doug Marks videos? Any good?
I ordered the combined level 3 and 4 DVD's last night. The only kicker was the shipping- 8.95 to ship a DVD through the USPS! I opted for the lower rate, but longer processing-only 4.95 that way. So, for less than 30 bucks (the cost of 1-2 real lessons) I should at least be able to pick up a few things. Thanks for all the input guys!

What would you recommend for the above intermediate but not advanced player? I never learned to sweep pick, and always wanted to be able to.
