• Do you guys do this?

I think I must be one of the world's most sporadic rhythym guitar players. In the first song my band has, which I mainly wrote, I two-handed tap in three distinct places, often in the middle of a riff. I also have at least 10 distinct time changes, with upwards of twenty individual riffs. I have 17 fret slides, feedback sections, you name it. Speeds range from SLOW "Boris"-esque doom to Angelcorpse/Krisiun style blast riffs. That's just the first song. The second one we're doing has no-Boris style doom, but instead has a Mastodon style "power riff" and a blues-based intro. Am I off balance? Are people gonna say DUDEFUCKIN'HELLYEAH! or just DUDEWHATTHEFUCK?

I'd have to hear it to say for sure. My weakness is arranging, I want to throw it all in one song. I learned to keep the changes and structure to about 2-3 per song or I'd only have 2-3 really really long songs Fills and embillishments are their own thing, fit whatever ya can in there without losing the feel of the song.

If it's all linked in a meaningful and tasteful way, the more the better I'd say.

You guys have to remember, I play death/grind. There is nothing tasteful about it. I like to think that it's meaningful though. But I don't use melodies in the traditional sense. I like to keep changing the music every few seconds. I want to keep people uneasy and on-edge with my songs, yet still have a connection to them. I for sure don't write music in keys or scales. I don't sit down and think "I am going to write a blues based jam in A". I CAN write a blues based jam in A, but that's been done. I like to think that I am at least trying to do something new. I'll post mp3's when we get something decent recorded, everything right now is on cassette and for band use only.

Well, Ace, you have ADD. Hopefully your audience doesn't. 17 riffs seems a bit much to me. Early Metallica tunes would have 4 or 5 different riffs in 'em. Maybe you can extend the riffs and turn that 1 song into 3. But what the hell do I know?

Re: Do you guys do this?

While early Metallica was cool, I like to think that metal has evolved in the last 20 years. Cephalic Carnage, Disgorge and several other bands are notorious for using 20+ riffs in a song. And while my band is FAR from their caliber, that is one of the reasons that I really like those bands. I think music should be involved and dynamic. I'm not trying to start a bar band or play in a coffee shop where people can just tune me out and go about their business. I want people to get pissed off, stomp around, shove eachother and get plowed in a giant blood orgy in front of the stage while I breathe fire and spit Jack Daniels all over them with one foot on the monitor, a crazy look in my eyes, and playing the sickest metal anyone has ever heard.

OKay Ace. You've had your turn. Can I have my pipe back now???

If you want to do 20+ riffs and switch time sigs every 12 bars and play in 4 keys and howl at the moon, go for it.

The title of this thread is "Do you guys do this?" My answer is NO, and I don't think I even know how to do that exactly...wow..would like to listen to it though.

20+ riffs is too much. You have to be a Mozart to make them link beautifully.

Spawn of Possession, Necrophagist, Severed Savior, Psycroptic... umm... there are a lot of bands that do this quite successfully.

That is debatable, as I've only heard of one of those bands!

What the hell exactly are these 17 fret slides you keep mentioning Ace? Why not 19 fret, or 5 fret?

You think so. I on the other hand don't feel much for Necrophagist or most other Death Metal bands.

There is a band on myspace that is just a guitar player and a drummer called Sleep Terror that do this kind of spasticness. Another band I know of that does this stuff that you can also hear on myspace is a band called PsyOpus. Its all really good stuff but this kind of music is def not about being linked together in a beautiful and relaxing way. I don't remember how to do short links with this quick reply thing or else I would post the links to the two bands mentioned early.
