Re: Do you guys do this?

OK, I guess only Xeno really understands the kind of music I am talking about. That's OK. I would rather be true to myself as a guitar player than play something I didn't believe in. I am not trying to make "beautiful" music, like I said. I am trying to make dark, spastic deathgrind. The questions was "Do you guys do this?" Not "Should I do this?" I DO play like that, and that's the way I want to play. I was just curious if anyone else here played like that.

I play that way sometimes. Fun as hell. But most of the time I'm very simplistic and straight-forward.

My problem with such complex, spastic music is that it's really difficult to come up with a progression plays with the listener's mind correctly, eventually leading them to some kind of "point" of the song. Few I've heard can do it well. You have ADD, so your stuff is probably pure brilliance.

        that do this quite successfully.

That is debatable, as I've only heard of one of those bands!

There is a band on myspace that is just a guitar player and a drummer called Sleep Terror

          [/ QUOTE ]

OMFG! They're **** incredible! That guitarist is in another project called Mincery. About a year or two ago, he had a full length recorded and was in the process of mixing it when his hard drive crashed and he lost everything. He lost several CD's worth of material, artwork, etc...

I have 8 Sleep Terror tracks and 3 Mincery tracks. The guy is so unbelievably talented, it's hard to imagine how someone like him isn't already signed to do just about anything... jazz, metal... whatever.

Interesting. I joined a new-style death metal band about 2 years ago for the hell of it. Originals with all kinds of riffs, time changes and tempo changes. Actually quite challanging to play correctly and keep straight. After I month I remembered why I quite the last death metal band I wa in (in 1990) - I could not stand the fukin music! Went and started a Metallica cover band (only Black album and before) for kicks and had a blast. To each his own!

lol RR05, reminds me of myself!

I love showing off playing technical music and everything in front of others. But whenever I pick the guitar up to have fun, I start jamming Metallica, Megadeth, Sabbath, Purple, etc.

Re: Do you guys do this?

I can't stand death metal period. The music is cool but I can't get past the "singing". Around here, the only gigs that death metal bands get are with 5 other bands on a Wednesday or Thursday night where you have to basically pay to play.

Re: Do you guys do this?

While in high school I had the idea of composing songs without using the same riff twice in a song. It was fun to come up with songs and pretty tough to remember all the riffs. Is it fun to listen to? The beauty is in the ear of the listener

See, I hate the vocals of most non-extreme stuff. Thrash is about as mellow as I can handle for vocals... hard rock, heavy metal, prog, and stuff like that just gets on my nerves.

I just never got the people who liked the vocals of Geddy Lee, Billy Squire, Sammy Hagar, Bon Jovi, Bonnet, etc....

I do like older Ozzy and Judas Priest... but some of that stuff would sound SO much better with a little more agression.

If you have too many riffs going in a song, it can become not so much a song as it is a-bunch-of-riffs-in-a-row. If you are going to use a bunch of riffs, its cool to have a recurrent "theme" - not necessarily a melody, but maybe a central riff. Just my two cents.

I am the exact opposite. I listen to something like CoB and think "These guys would be so much better if Alexi shut his mouth and hired a real singer, perhaps Timo Kotipelto since he's not doing so much anymore"

I think CoB would be much better off if they didn't sound so fuckin' sacchrine-y. They are like the Hanson of black metal!!

I don't think they can rightly be called black metal. It's more like power metal with a horrible "singer"
