Just pick something more rare like Locrian, then you'll sound different.

Experiment with some altered scales, or try a melodic minor or harmonic minor instead of the natural minor.

Here's one called the "Ahava Raba" scale that Dream theater uses for the "In the Name of God" main riff; it is very middle-Eastern sounding:

------------------
------------------
-------------3-5--
-----2-3-5-6------
-3-4--------------
------------------

It is based on the harmonic minor scale, but starts on the fifth of the scale. This example is in the key of F, so the above scale starts on C (fifth of the scale).

Below is the harmonic minor scale in the key of F, starting on the root:

------------------
------------------
------------------
-------------2-3--
-------1-3-4------
-1-3-4------------

- E.

Get out of thinking in scales all together.

it will help alot.

Start writing stuff that are chromaticy.

usually stuff is scale go 1 - 2 - 4, or 2 - 4 - 5

to be in scale.

start wringting songs that don't follow anything and you will be suprised at how it fits still.

I don't usually approach the fretboard thinking in scales. I use different ways of looking at it. Sometimes I see it as shapes, sometimes I see it as feelings, sometimes I see it as objects. I also tend to think about what sound I want to get out of my head, and how best to translate it to the fretboard. Can you play guitar without thinking about your fingers, but instead listening to your amp? That's sort of what I do sometimes.

Pedal Tones. Look them up online. Eric Johnson style octave string skipping. Arlin Roths Master of the Telecaster instructional video. It is totally useful.

Pedal Tones are awesome...

While ACE is correct I still think you need the knowledge of how the fretboard is all put together that helps bridge certain gaps

HELL NO!! I like thinking the way I do. Why the hell would I want to be normal? I'll leave that to everyone else. I fly my freak flag high!! I have books of scales, and I open them maybe every six months to go in there and tinker with some exotic scale and quickly forget it.

Im the same as you Ace.
What you could also do is try blending scales together, or maybe even think up solos etc that are melodically complementing, say, if the song was in E, play the solo in C (if thats the correct melody ). Kinda like a twin guitar melody, but you play the solo in the key of the higher melodic line. Or something
