F Lydian or ?

So I don't confuse myself, I've seen this both ways. Which is correct...

If I see something written on paper and it says F Lydian, does it mean;

F Lydian

* F is the 4th of the C Major scale, so I would be playing the fourth scale of Cmajor.......or

* F Lydian means it's the F Scale thus making the Lydian a B flat scale.

I've seen it explained both ways though I believe the first explanation seems to be most correct. [img]/images/graemlins/scratchhead.gif[/img]

F Lydian means the 4th of the C major scale; so the Lydian scale starting on F (F G A B C D E).

Ok... Just to clarify

If I see something written saying F Dorian,

I would be playing the 2nd scale mode in the key of E flat, starting with the 'F' note.

Lydian is a major scale with a raised fourth degree. So you could think of it as ionian with a raised fourth, also.

For F lydian, take the F ionian scale (F G A Bb C D E F) and raise the fourth, Bb, up a half-step to B. Thus, F lydian is (F G A B C D E F).
