• My last 7-string thread for a bit, also sweeping

I finally ordered one, and when it gets here I need to learn how to play it. Anyone have any good ideas, tips, links, etc. for 7-string techniques. I'm most likely tuning AEADGBE. The main thing I want to focus on is really getting good with chords and rhythm playing to do jazz/fusion type stuff.

The other big thing I want to practice more is sweeping. I'd love to see any and all sweeping patterns you guys have for any amount of strings. The only patterns I have practiced so far go like this:

-----2-5-2
----3-----3
---2-------2
--4---------4
-5-----------5
--------------

2 octave major triad

-----3-7-3
----5-----5
---4-------4
--5---------5
-7-----------7
--------------

2 octave minor triad

---------12-15-12
-------14--------14
-----12------------12
---14----------------14
-16--------------------16
-------------------------

2 octave half-diminished triad

---2-5-2-----5-8-5-------8-11-8
--4-----4---7-----7----10------10
-5-------5-8-------8-11----------11-etc
----------------------------------
----------------------------------
----------------------------------

Well the diminished scale is just those 4 notes is it not?

heres a bigger major (A) one to practice doing 2 strings on the same fret where you have to kinda roll your fingers.

--------------5-9h-5------------
------------5--------5----------
----------6------------6--------
--------7----------------7------
------7-------------------7-----
--5-9-----------------------9-5-

A diminished scale is constructed alternating between tones and semitones, or steps and halfsteps. Depending on how you wanna say it.

I like constructing my own by playing around with a scale and finding interesting note choices. I have no clue if these have been done before or not, but they all come from the D-minor scale:

-----------------------------------------------------------13p12p10-12-12b-r(12)-10--------
---------------------11-13/15p13p12---------------------11--------------------------11-10~~
-7h9p7------------10----------------13---------------10------------------------------------
-------8-------10---------------------14/12-10----12---------------------------------------
---------10/12---------------------------------12------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

---------------13b-r(13)~-|-15p13p12----------13~-|-13p12p10----------10-12-13b~-
------------15------------|----------13----13-----|----------11----11------------
---------14---------------|-------------14--------|-------------12---------------
12h14/15------------------|-----------------------|------------------------------
--------------------------|-----------------------|------------------------------
--------------------------|-----------------------|------------------------------

I like mixing in slides and hammer-on/pull-offs in with sweeps, because they add a lot of flavor to solos. Marty Freidman was a big influence in this department. I also did this at work from memory, so I appologize for any screw-ups resulting from not having a guitar to test on.

Looks exciting. I might give that stuff a couple of run-throughs at home tonight.

If you leave the low string a B, here's a FOUR octave B minor arpeggio:
-------------------------10-h14-t19p-14p-10-----------------
----------------------12--------------------12--------------
-------------------11--------------------------11-----------
----------------12--------------------------------12--------
---------5-9-14--------------------------------------14-9-5-
-----2-7----------------------------------------------------
-0-3--------------------------------------------------------

I can't keep going to the right to finish it up but you just go back down the same notes.

YES, his video shows some real cool sweeping with tapping on the e string (he does it real smoothly too)
the other sweeping video I recommend is Frank Gambale "Monster Licks" he shows a ton of shapes to sweep, all kinds of arpeggios, that one is real good
If this is our perdition, will you walk with me?

I think the 4 octave ones are going to sound insane when they're up to tempo. Mindless shredding here I come! Now I can't wait for that guitar to get here...

The diminished scale is, whole, half, whole, half forever. Diminished chords repeat themselves every minor 3rd.

Depending on how how you use em! Classical composers use them very subtely (spell check).
