Well, used to be thrash metal with a bit of growling vocals. But now it's changed, kinda like grindcore, death metal, shred and thrash put together. With some clean vocals now and then for the zakk wylde vibe

Old school (Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest etc.). I'm a shred nerd though, as my playing improves I'll throw more shred in there.

Melodic death/thrash metal. I guess The Haunted would be a good comparison, although some of my band's stuff has more of a Death sound to it.

also thrash metal and sometimes new york hardcore ( that 90's metal style )

Mostly old school metal and shred
Van Halen, Ratt, Satriani, Vai, Greg Howe, Yngwie,Vinnie Moore, Rush, Jeff Beck, Frank Marino, robin Trower,George Lynch, but I like some of the newer stuff (not new but newer), James Murphy, Michael Harris, Sevendust,russo and Stravato have an amazing metal/fusion instrumental album out that just smokes from beginning to end.
I don't really listen to music with vocals much these days, mostly jam out instrumentals

Brutal death, oppresive doom and chaotic goregrind, with a bit of chest-pounding rock thrown in for good measure.

Mostly the Gallop heavy down picked Thrash... Not really all I listen to but it is what I am best most likely since I cut my teeth on the guitar learning Metallica so go figure [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] I am more of a Melodic Death fan nowadays sorta but I am not a big Death Vocal fan. I am not a grindcore fan though. I love a good pantera thogh and that is my sound mostly deep grooves and I love Phil style vocals

I'm no expert, but certainly Death would qualify as melodic, especially the 90s stuff. The Gothenburg style of DM is fairly melodic; check out In Flames and Dark Tranquillity.
