I agree with you shredmonster...You must let the music breath !!
Someone once told me that music is what happens, inbetween the notes.Following this line of thought...if all the spaces are filled with sound it is no longer music or musical. It may be great technique but is that what music is about?
Anyhow...I think this is why I always preferred Al DiMiola over John Mcglauflin(sp)John may have been a "Better Guitarist" but Al's playing seemed to speak to me.
Brett Garsed is one of the best with the perfect blend of rock expresion and fuison timed lines out there-Rock/fusion is the perfect blend of styles when guys like Brett and Greg let loose-Both these guys do a lot of 4 note per string scales/string skipping arps and sound great-there are other bedroom guitarists with there own sites who do the same and sound like novice players with piss poor phrasing and vibrato-no need to mention names
The bottom line is you need to have it all. And even then you'll never be a guitar hero like EVH. Those days are gone, the only thing close to a guitar hero these days would be someone like John Mayer. Better buy yourself an acoustic and play nothing but barre chords if you want the rest of the world to think you're any good. Not that this is very on topic or anything, but I'm pissed off after seeing the "best musicians in the world" on the grammy's last night and only recognizing Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Slash, Steven Tyler, and some of the other old people.

I was an acoustic player first, I have a special fondness for the acoustic guitar. Not a day goes by that I don't pick up my Takamine!
I hear ya on what is considered fine musicianship these days (ridiculous... boring), but I could give a rat's ass about all that. Mainstream music is not going to get any better any time soon. As soon as a talented new artist explodes on the scene they are manufactured into something else. Their souls are stolen (or bought, and I'm speaking generally here).
Me? I've got my own music to create and my own appreciations and that's all that matters to me. I don't care about being "good" according to anyone's standards, it's no fun that way. If I wanted to cater to the masses I could easily process formulaic "music". It isn't hard.
There are so many incredible artists, just like you mentioned, that are overlooked or unheard of. These people are the ones that have it in their souls and make music because they love it so much. It's a part of them and they don't let anyone take it away. Some are recognized, which is awesome.
But nothing, not even some "special" award, will ever equal someone's artistic expression in my opinion.
If you want some really outstanding examples of phrasing, listen to some bebop lines. They're so damn cool. Dizzy Gillespe, Charlie Parker, etc. I'm trying to nail it with my jazz tone... Perhaps apply some of it to shredding as well.
I use finger vibrato and phrasing more than anything.
EM I suggest yo to listen to old Kiss (Ace Frehley), Skynyrd's Freebird, Billy Gibbons (zz top), David Gilmour (pink floyd) etc. solos. Those guys are phrasing geniuses and learning from them gives you a good start to become a badass guitar-goddess because those leads aren't very hard, anyway that's how I started.
3 good songs to get started with:
Kiss - Love Gun
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird
Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
Good Luck!
"There is nothing more fearful than imagination without taste" - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
"To be stupid, selfish and have good health are three requirements for happiness, though if stupidity is lacking, all is lost" - Gustave Flaubert

Well put. In my opinion many of the most talented musicians are never heard and will never be famous.
I don't typically watch Star Search but I was passing by it one night and there was this black singer who was hands down much better than Ruben or the other skinny white guy who became the two biggest winners of that season. This guy was a pro and very talented. He did not win. I thought what a crock of s**t this show is.
Same thing in the music business.
Think Elvis was original? Copied his look from James Dean and his voicing from Roy Orbison. Same for many - EVH was not the first to use tapping technique. Most of his techniques were invented by other guys and EVH put them all into one style. Goes for most of these famous musicians and artists.
listen to old gary moore (before he got the blues)...his solos really show what good phrasing does. Check out "Corridors of Power" and "Victims of the Future" on CD. on the song "empty rooms" his solos almost sound like a harmony vocal track. great stuff
Thank You! I've written your suggestions down and will spend some time this weekend listening and paying close attention to these guys.
"Freebird"... Everytime I listen to that one it gets stuck in my head for DAYS!!!!!!!!!
"If I leave here tomorrow....
Would you still remember me..."
See? It's already stuck just thinking about it.
Thanks so much everyone, y'all have really helped clear this up and I've already made progress in my own phrasing.
