    I think knowledge of scales and modes is a must, but not to the extent that some people take it to. I think when you know the rules and know how to break them you can unlock yourself more so than you could without any knowledge whatsoever.

    As far as reading music, I don't think that is a must, I learned to read but ended up using my ear or memory after reading through it so much that my skill has diminished too much that it really isn’t a factor for me.

    Knowing how to associate sounds, feelings, moods and colors with scales and modes helps when you begin creating your own music or when you improvise in a jam. I know theory and what I want to do in any situation but I don't over think it. It’s kind of like learning the alphabet, then words, then sentences then punctuation. You are not thinking of those when carry on a conversation, you just do it. Same is true with music, learn it, use it, don't over analyze it and go for it.
