• More Jazz III matters....

Red or black? What's the difference and why do you prefer one or the other?

P.S. No, I'm not writing a book about this. I just can't seem to find any clear answers.

The black ones are more like ABS plastic (like the Stubbies are made from) than Nylon, and the Reds are Nylon.

I used to use full-sized really thin picks because I was a hamfist, and I could swing it pretty quick. A friend of mine had some red Jazz IIIs and I tried one. Needless to say, it didn't work at first because of my picking style, but once I learned to let the pick do all the work instead of my wrist, I grew to love the Reds. The blacks were also Nylon at first, so there was no problem using either one, but they changed the black ones to a stiffer material in recent years and I personally don't like it as much as the red nylon.

The black ones feel like the same material that a Duncan pickup box is made of - really sharp in their attack. The reds feel slightly softer, like a trussrod cover.

Dunlop refers to the black Jazz IIIs as being made of "Stiffo" Nylon.

Thanks, Newc. That clears things up greatly. I've seen where a lot of players prefer red, but you're the first to explain why.

The black ones wear down fast as hell compared to the red ones as well...I've been using the same red one for 2 or 3 months and in 1 month I went through 2 or 3 of the black ones...Black ones are easier to grip though, but you get used to the feel of the red ones pretty quick and compensate for it...

Agreed. I have always liked the red ones better but never knew why.

Re: More Jazz III matters....

About a year or so ago, I bought one 6-pack of red nylon Jazz IIIs and one 6-pack of black stiffo Jazz IIIs with the intention of trying both out. I initially opened up the pack of black ones because to me they looked "cooler". Needless to say that that very first black Jazz III is still with me today attacking my Shannon Soloist. It's indestructible.

I should really open the pack of red nylon ones and compare but I can't seem to get away from the black stiffo ones since they just work so well.

I don't know, but I might have a psychological aversion towards nylon picks considering my very first guitar picks were those crappy Dunlop Nylon ones and those wore out very quickly.

I'm all about the black ones. I don't know that I ever compared them to the red ones (I own and play em both, just never gave it any thought), but I use the black ones more than the reds and love em.

Yeah I got some of them jazz III's. I don't even like them that much, but I haven't found any better.

Black ones...they grip better and after you wear down the tip, they glid up and down strings easily for sweeps.

you guys use regular jazz IIIs or the "jumbo" ones? I prefer the jumbo, I keep dropping the small ones, although I used to use them (90-91).
Its a complete catastrophe. But Im a professional, I can rise above it. LOL

I used to use the Jazz III's and small Stubbies, but 5 years ago I suffered a broken neck (c3 and c4), wasn't ever even supposed to walk again, much less play guitar..there was some residual nerve damage caused by the collapse of the spinal column..I had a hard time holding onto the small picks once I got up and playing again..I switched to the Sharp Dunlop tortex 1.5mm's and everything felt right as rain..no issues holding onto them.

I accidently bought a pack of reds over the internet, they seem to be holding up better than the blacks, but they have less grip, which is a pain

Grip can always be altered. Slash a few marks into the gripping area with a hobby knife. You'll probably end up roughing up the raised lettering that's on the Jazz IIIs and get better grip.
