Scales and Modes

Whats a good book for scales and modes? Anyone have any personal favorites thats to the point and pretty easy as far as theory and such?

Find the biggest book you can of scales and modes, you might actually be better off by buying a piano scales book, it will be more extensive, and it will help your sight reading ability.

I bought the guitar grimoire series on DVD recently. Here is a link http://www.guitargrimoire.com/
The DVD's are companions to the books and are pretty corny as the author has a whole grim reaper theme going but I can tell you after repeated viewing I now completely understand scales and modes as well as chords. Two thumbs up!

"Scales & Modes" by Ron Middlebrook is the only book you'll need. Created especially for guitarists.

It is more than just patterns and often gives you chord progressions for you to use to improvise over with the scale or mode

I find that it is really helpfull to avoid learning patterns when trying to memorize scales and modes......Because the patterns make it too easy, whereas if you learn the formula for the mode and then figure it out with the note names you learn way better, and also memorize note positions at the same time.

That being said, the guitar grimoire is pretty good, although it doesnt contain some scales, and is laid out in a rediculous manner. I would suggest a piano book aswell. And dont just stop at learning the major modes. Harmonic minor and melodic minor, and just about every other altered scale have modes too.

Al DiMeola chords,scales & arpeggios. Also Segovia diatonic major and minor scales. And, I agree with a piano book, cause, notes are notes. Although a guitar specific book will usually provide good fingerings.

Okay, but after you've done that, just grab a "G" string and shake that bitch like ya mean it.
Cause all the scales and modes in the world won't make some sweeties panties wet unless you can shake that "G" string and grin at her...all nite long...lookin her right in the eye.

I'd like to add to this thread (I don't want to high-jack, Dolan, sorry), but what is THE book on theory/scales and modes for guitar, for beginners?

I really don't know a lot of theory yet, but I have two months of free time and I want to educate myself!

I'd try "Practictical Theory For Guitar" by Don Latarski. I think the book is awesome. I've been using it for years now, and I'm still learning. Its 160 pages of pure music theory for guitar. You'll see it in a guitar store becuase it's bright pink and easy to spot. Good luck...
