I tried those stubby 2mm picks but I really can't get into them, esp for fast playing.. its just too thick and hits my strings lol

The Stubbys are great for speed, but just don't do a pick scrape

And yeah I have the same trouble with J-IIIs (red) and tremolo picking - I get kinda hung up. If I'm playing something that I've already worked out to have temolo picking (like for recording) I'll lay out a regular-sized thinner pick (medium or light) so I can grab it quickly.

For live playing, I guess you'd just need to learn to use the very tip of the pick.

I've also found you get a better tone when strumming clean Major chords and clean picked passages by rotating the pick to one of the corners instead of the tip.

Are those stubby similar in size and shape to the small red JIII's? I can see how the stubbys are more smooth and have beveled edges... maybe they are worth checking out.

They sell the stubby Jazz ones that are the exact same size as Jazz III's. I bought some but didn't like them as much

do less thick/heavy picks work better in general when you are trying to play 16th and other fast notes? I am thinking since they are not as thick, and have more give, they would be able to strike the string more times provided you are using proper technique?

I'm not sure. I find that for the absolute fastest playing the stubby jazz picks are the best as they're very stiff and glossy but come to a decently thin point at the end. I'm just so used to the jazz III at this point that nothing else feels as good to me

The Stubbys are definitely faster than the IIIs, and are about the same size.

And it's not that the Stubby can't do good pick scrapes, it's the fact that the edges are so sharp that the wound strings cut notches in them, and then the notches hang up on the plain strings

"Proper technique" is kinda subjective IMO. I switched to IIIs mostly because I found I was only using the very tip of the pick, so the rest of a regular pick was wasted space and clunky.
If you're flatpicking with a Jazz III, you're not doing it right. Just use the tip (maybe 1/8" exposed under your thumb)

my search for the ideal pick has ended, I've tried tons of different ones and the blue Dunlop Tortex 1.00 is the best for me.
