• Trills on the high E

I'm really havin' a hard time getting this down. Especially around the higher frets. I understand that, like full vibrato, it takes a lot of patience and practice. What I'm wondering is, how much should I bend the string while doing the trill? Whole step? 1/2 step? Less? Of course, doing it on the high E leaves a lot less room for error since it's right next to the edge of the fretboard. Lastly, what technique do you guys use for avoiding/muting the adjacent B string? Do you bend it out of the way or just plain mute it? Thanx in advance for any help.

Muting: I use my fingers not my palm to mute most of the time.

When playing on the high e - whatever finger I am using while fretting the high e I will use the tip of it to mute the b string above. This takes a lot of practice though but that is how I do it.

I like BB King's "fanhand" trill style.
Of course, he's got fat fingers that mute the adjacent strings

What finger are you using to do it with? I've tried all 4, but get the best response with my middle. I also lay my index across the adjacent strings and mute the top ones at the bridge, or I'll mute them all with my picking hand, using my ring and middle to grab the 1 and 3 if I'm trilling the 2nd.

Do you tend to slightly bend the B string as you're bending the E?

I'm gonna have to try laying my index across them. A problem I have also is that my right palm is still sitting right next to the bridge so the B tends to ring out even if muted or touched/bumped while bending the E. I just needed to pick some brains to find a good technique and then go from there.

Most of the time I'll mute the B string with the middle finger of my picking hand. If your bending the E string and trilling you can try to mute with the tip of your fret hand index finger. A lot of different things can come into play here without knowing wxactly what your trying to accomplish
