Re: Fretboard tapping, help me learn how it\'s done

No need to transcribe out EVERY SINGLE NOTE, just one set of each "triplet" position (high tapped note + middle hammered/pulloff note + lowest note) on the string of choice. No rush either... I'll try my best to keep working at it as well in the meantime.

I've been on a huge Def Leppard playing kick lately and everything is rather easy so far except hearing the tapping. The "Stand Up" solo has its beauty in its sheer simplicity and those downward slides are things I've been incorporating into my technique lately ever since I learned parts of Joe Satriani's classic "Always With Me".

I've been on a DL kick for oh say 20+ years...
I love Phil's stuff. Believe it or not, it wasn't until last year that I actualy sat down and figured out any of his solos.
Not that difficult really, but very fun to play.
I just liked to play the rythym parts. Nice hooks and really catchy. Real no brainer on a lot of them, but they are just great to have fun with.

That's sort of my approach to playing guitar.
The moment it's stops being fun and becomes work, I'll quit.

Tapping as many refer to it or some call it right hand hammer ons. If tapping strings to create a harmonic, this can take some time getting use to. But whether tapping strings to get a harmonic or tapping (like eruption or intro to Hot for teacher)it takes time and much practice to learn to do it well. No way around it, one has to practice such tech. to get it right and to get comfortable with it.

I suggest download and then watch(US festival VH)at the end of pretty woman, Ed does his solo which is mostly tapping whether its harmonics or not, it great stuff to watch and learn from.
Peace, Love and Happieness and all that stuff...

"Anyone who tries to fling crap my way better have a really good crap flinger."

I personally do not care how it was built as long as it is a good playing/sounding instrument.

Yes, there's a bee in the pudding.

@NOTP I went through that piece about 50 times last night and for the life of me can't remember it.
The entire run is on the B string starting at the 17th fret.
The root note for each tap is 17,16,14,12,11 then a slide or bend (your choice)from 11,12,11.
It's definately double tracked, which causes one to throw pics across the room before realizing it and taking it into account.
I'll post more later.
I may bring it to my buddy Al. He's a tapping god and can play all things Randy and Eddie.

Re: Fretboard tapping, help me learn how it\'s done

I think I got it!! Although I think the main notes relating to the tapping part in this song's key (E major, I think) on the B string are 5, 7, 9, 10, 12, 14, 16, and 17.

I fooled around a bit in Guitar Pro and I think the sequence is:

17-12-9

16-12-9

14-9-7

12-9-7

Here is the MIDI file to confirm:

http://www.koolpages.com/notp/standup.mid

Lemme know if that link doesn't work and I'll upload it to a different location. And lemme know if my MIDI file sounds remotely right.

Actually, listening to the real song, it does sound double-tracked, but that could also be from the delay which really helps to thicken up that solo tone. You can especially hear the delay right after the only string bend in the whole solo.

Re: Fretboard tapping, help me learn how it\'s done

Interesting midi file, but it sounds pretty close.
I ran through it with and without effects, and I think you nailed it.
As for the delay, Phil typicaly uses an analog delay on one channel only. So for this to sound like it does using his typical setup, it would have to have been double tracked.

Re: Fretboard tapping, help me learn how it\'s done

A little extra gain or volume helps tremendously when your trying to learn to tap.Humbuckers or hotter pups make it easier to hear the taps as well.Once you aquire the skill it becomes easier to do without the additional gain or specific pup's.When I first tried to do them on a strat with single coils I got so discouraged I just about gave up. Then one day I got a Jackson with a JB in the bridge and was amazed at how easy it was.

Re: Fretboard tapping, help me learn how it\'s done

Maybe im the freak of the bunch here but when i do two handed tapping i hit the note fairly firmly with my right index finger ( got that way from EVH). Then i pull the string down slightly like a pick stroke with the tipof my finger when i pull off of the string. Wheen i tap i flip the pick between my second and third finger tips and hold it there and use m thumb as an anchor on the bass side of the neck or just rest my forearm on the guitra in a better spot to reach the notes i want to hit and move accordingly.
A freind of mine saw my flip my pic between my fingers andsaid "whoa what the hell was that?" So i showed hi in slomo and he said it was too weird for him to do. So i guess im a freak. But hey its quicker for me then EVH's trick of palming the pick in my middle finger.

There's some good (and free!) information on tapping at jfrocks.com. Go to the Lessons section, and look for Tapping 101.
