Resently I've adopted the metronome practicing routine. Its good i've only done it for a week and my picking is way better. Also the metronome gives you away of measuring your progress as well as improving ur timing. basically for my warm up i do all the modes alternate picking to different speeds on the metronome and every day i try and beat the fastest of what i did the day before. its intense and you have do it alot.

That is actually a really good idea. Too bad I could never get myself to do it (even back ion the 80s LOL!)

Re: A question thats been asked a thousand times

As you can already see from various posts throughout this thread, and because of those, I want to mention a very important matter.

Learn this stuff when your younger(a young pup)still living at home. It least in the Jr High or high school age range. Why? At this tender age, one shouldn't have the committment of working for a living or the distractions or adult matters(relationships)to interefere. In other words, this is the age when you can take advantage of and dedicate to practicing, learning all that you need to get good, before adult matters begin to set in and become a deciding factor and possibly interefere.

An older friend of the family, he's in his 60's, one of the nicer men you could ever know.
He decided a couple of years ago to take up and learn to play guitar. I never make any comments against or for his guitar interest I just silently observed. To make a long story short, after approx 6-8 months he quit taking lessons and playing altogether and hasn't played since. What happened? He was a grandpa, still married, still worked full time, had other personal interests that were more important to him then guitar. So, where can practice and playing time fit into a sched like that? It doesn't.

What does it mean?
When your young and living at home you got all the time in the world to learn and get good at guitar. Use it wisely, those teenage years pass by very quickly. Time waits for no one. Make the best of those years while you can.
Peace, Love and Happieness and all that stuff...

"Anyone who tries to fling crap my way better have a really good crap flinger."

I personally do not care how it was built as long as it is a good playing/sounding instrument.

Yes, there's a bee in the pudding.

I know what you mean man but Im 21 and at university and work 28 hours a week on top of uni at a camping shop. Recently I havnt had chance to play guitar. Played a small intimate birthday party gig last night, went well, I was drunk and was showing off so much, I was the one doing the over-the-fretboard shit and stuff and kneeling and lying on the floor mid-solo. Man Im good when Im drunk

An alternative to the metronome thing is to get a tremolo pedal and play with the Rate knob. This makes practice time not only worthwhile, but also fun, as you can come up with interesting things. Pick on the "quiet" and let the note ring out on the upsweep. You'll get various organ/violin effects that you can one day incorporate into a solo.
It's also great for improving your tapping and position-changing skills.

And it sounds a bit better than click click click click or beep beep beep beep
