• Need practice regimen pointers for self taught

With work, family and life, I find it hard to set myself on a consistent routine to learn how to play. I don't have time for lessons, so I've been teaching myself how to play. I don't have a set routine for practicing, and I feel this is keeping me from learning to play as quickly as I would like to.

I do a few basic finger exercises a couple of nights a week. Most of the time I spend from one to two hours every other night learning rhythm to a couple of songs every couple of weeks by tab. My goals so far have been pretty simple, basically to play rhythm clean, and to learn a couple of songs every two weeks. One thing I've realized after doing this for over a year, is that I know little to nothing about the notes on the fretboard, and the patterns they fall into.

I would like some opinions please on what types of things a beginner should try to learn off the bat to gain a better understanding of the fretboard. I've been thinking here lately that I should start over from scratch and start with learning scales and the common open position chords and go from there.

I've spent the past year thinking, I need to learn this song and that song. Now that I've gotten to the point where I can half assed make my fingers and pick hand work in unison, I'd like to know if I play a "C" chord what note should I go next and understand why and how in the hell I got there. I would really appreciate any tips and pointers on what type of practice routine I should follow to make me a smarter and more knowledgeable guitar player. Keep in mind I can set aside at most a couple of hours a night, and I have no desire at this point to play lead.

    Thanks a lot in advance!

There was a thread similar about this.

I also recommend this book Guitar Freboard Workout.

It helped me look at things in a different light and help me quite a bit.

With all the books, videos and internet sites available you can easily get distracted with practicing. Too many things to learn and try you never really get good at one thing.

I've been pretty happy w/ Troy Stetina's method books. Check them out at http://www.stetina.com/lessons.html

He's also got a bunch of good articles that discuss various aspects of learning to play: http://www.stetina.com/articles.html

Guitar pro has done wonders for me. It lets you hear how pieces are supposed to be played and you can slow them down or speed them up as you see the need.
