With work, family and life, I find it hard to set myself on a consistent routine to learn how to play. I don't have time for lessons, so I've been teaching myself how to play. I don't have a set routine for practicing, and I feel this is keeping me from learning to play as quickly as I would like to.
I do a few basic finger exercises a couple of nights a week. Most of the time I spend from one to two hours every other night learning rhythm to a couple of songs every couple of weeks by tab. My goals so far have been pretty simple, basically to play rhythm clean, and to learn a couple of songs every two weeks. One thing I've realized after doing this for over a year, is that I know little to nothing about the notes on the fretboard, and the patterns they fall into.
I would like some opinions please on what types of things a beginner should try to learn off the bat to gain a better understanding of the fretboard. I've been thinking here lately that I should start over from scratch and start with learning scales and the common open position chords and go from there.
I've spent the past year thinking, I need to learn this song and that song. Now that I've gotten to the point where I can half assed make my fingers and pick hand work in unison, I'd like to know if I play a "C" chord what note should I go next and understand why and how in the hell I got there. I would really appreciate any tips and pointers on what type of practice routine I should follow to make me a smarter and more knowledgeable guitar player. Keep in mind I can set aside at most a couple of hours a night, and I have no desire at this point to play lead.
Thanks a lot in advance!
