Please post one here!

I've done a few internet searches and whatever I try never seems to sound right.

Thanks

Re: Idiots guide to open D tuning

Thanks but... I'm hoping someone could actualy talk me through how to do it. The two E strings are no problem but how do I get from the G to F# and the B to A?

Thanks

Re: Idiots guide to open D tuning

ok.....detune the 1st and 6th strings a full step (2 semitones).
5th and 4th strings stay as they are
tune the 3rd string one semitone down
tune the 2nd string a full step down

voila. open D

Thank you.

I found a little mp3 of the tuning too: Open D

For anyone interested the best site I found was this one: Guitar.About

i auditioned for a band and the lead guy played the whole night in open D, i was watching him while I was playing and it completely screwed me up trying to figure out how and even more why?

IIRC the latest opeth (ghost reveries) is open D all the way.

Isn't it D A D G A D?

That's what I call open D. It used to be a somewhat popular tuning. I use that tuning to play Kashmir.

That's what I call D tuning as well.

No, what I posted is Open D. I guess you can change the F# to G for a little variation, though.

DADGAD is different to Open D. Both are fun tunings to mess with. I've been messing around with different tunings since I found an old Stefan Grossman book on the subject years ago.

IIRC Sevendust's Angels Son is in Open D. Fun song to play.

Re: Idiots guide to open D tuning

it should be fairly easy to figure out the tuning kinda like a math problem. figure out the difference between the desired note and what it is in the natural tuning then find that notes octave to use to tune it up. i only use alternate tunings when weakly attempting to impersonate what i try and call slide guitar playing, but this is how i tune when i do it.

i think eric sardinas (badass) plays open d as well, or he did on the ultra zone tour with vai, at least.

you can always set it up and powertab, and tune to the ptab guitar.

I used to keep my acoustic in D A D G A D it made a nice change, and made it good to break out of playing/writing the same old licks, cos they werent in the positions you thought they were in!
