For basic stuff, the Metal Method series is good. I also like Rusty Cooley's for sweep picking.

I have to agree with the views on Petrucci's Rock Discipline and Paul Gilberts stuff. Gilbert is an entertainer which helps when watching his videos. I picked up some useful ideas from his.
Marty Friedman is only OK in my book though. Worth watching as some of his ideas are a bit unusual and more interesting than the stock stuff forund everywhere but he is very dull in front of the camera and his boring monotone voice make it a bit of a struggle to watch his video more than a few times.
I would recommend picking some of your fav artists and doing a search and there is a good chance they will have something done, especially if they are an 80's player. Also check Youtube.com for some short clips from instructionals to see if they might be what your looking for.
