  • Sweeping same fret/different string patterns

    Hey, can any of you guys give me some advice on sweeping patterns where its the same fret but different string?
    heres an example:
    E||--18-14----------------------14-18-||
    B||--------16----------------16-------||
    G||-----------16----------16----------||
    D||--------------16----16-------------||
    A||-----------------18----------------||
    E||-----------------------------------||

    ascending up towards the A string, how should i play the 3 16th fret notes,do i bar it or what?

    thanks

    You have to sort of roll your finger so that only one note sounds at a time. It is really hard, I can't really do it successfully

      Pretty much a barre, yep, but with the aforementioned 'rolling' of the finger. You have to practice and practice and practice. I can not yet do it at any appropriate speed myself.
      You took too much, man. Too much. Too much.

        When possible, i avoid rolls. I'd rather move my fret hand than roll. Shawn Lane agrees with me

          ok, so if i am going from down to up, i kinda bar the 16th fret in advance and roll as i ascend the strings?

            roll that finger-in fact that shape was the 1st one i nailed smoothly.If you were playing that triad shape on the top 3 strings i would use diferent fingers for the g and b strings

                This is the hardest thing in sweeping. Why don't you try first some two string rolls?

                Like this:
                Code:
                |-----------------------9--14p--9-------------------||----|
                |-------------------10-------------10---------------||----|
                |*--------------11---------------------11----------*||----|
                |*----------11-----------------------------11------*||----|
                |---9h--12-------------------------------------12---||----|
                |---------------------------------------------------||----|
                I can do this easily, but still can't do the 3 string rolls yet.

                    I had the same problem, start very slow...do the pattern in my previous post in triplets @80-90 bpm with metronome! and slowly increase..

                    After about 2 weeks I can do it now comfortably at 140bpm after my fingers are warmed up and I start practicing sweeps ...then slowly increasing I come to about 165-170 bpm after an hour...I have to work more, my goal is set at 260 bpm!!

                      Barre & Roll. As with all sweeping you also need the proper picking - especially on the barre type arps. Meaning circular picking. Have to make sure the timing of your picking hand coincides with the roll.
                      At first these were harder for me but now they are much easier than regular sweeps because I have the "hang" of them. Once you get these down you can really fly and get that really fast sweeping arp sound.
                      Try the minor ones also.
                      PLAY TILL U DIE !!!

                        I agree, once you get the hang of rolling your fingers as is necessary for that, those sort of shapes will be the easiest ones to play. At least the fastest ones to play.
                        I used to practice doing that by playing a sweep up and down repeatedly on one fret across 5 or 6 strings using one finger. That's a good way to concentrate on the finger rolling and develop the feel for it when you stick it in the middle of a regular arpeggio.

                          Across 5 or 6 strings?!

                          How can your finger possibly roll over 6 strings?

                            Well, it's hard to do real cleanly but I figure if you're working at it you'll at least get alot better at rolling 2 or 3 strings. I guess I sort of arch my finger backwards a little and I think I can do it across 5 strings pretty cleanly, but I try to do them all just to get my fingers working that way.

                            When I was really trying to learn how to sweep with some dexterity, I would play Mary had A Little Lamb, but for each note of the melody I would sweep across 5 strings with my middle finger. That was goofy as hell but it was good for my finger.
