best way to practice scales?

I think the best way is to play them mixing picking and legato. Also playing them all on one string/2 strings etc in different keys ascending and descending.
Come up with patterns and play them. As usual start everything slowly and cleanly and build up the speed when you know it well enough with a metronome.
