It is really important to have a metronome that has a good "click" tone, that cuts through your playing. Because the metronome should lead you, literally kick you.

Also really fast playing should be like 3% of your practicing time. If you have a hard time playing 16th at 100bpm, I'd recommend you first start playing the same patterns as 8ths at 120 gradually raising it up to 200 and then return back to playing as 16th from 80-90 gradually raising it up to 100.
To make sure that your fingers play the pattern automatically, change to the triplets (you had 1-2-3-4 1-2-3-4 pattern, now it is 1-2-3 4-1-2 3-4-1 etc) starting at 120-140...
    Because I don't say it
    Doesn't mean I ain't thinking it

what the fuck are you bitches talking about scales and shit, metronomes, rhythm machines, backing tracks etc. foremost should be used for making your rhythm playing tight, I've seen too many scales wizards who are all over the place when it comes to rhythm parts.

Lead playing should be right on time too. Just ultra-fast shredding hides sloppy timing. But lead playing is not only about putting out an 8-bar string of 32ths. Actually tight picked 16th's notes with good timing and interesting note choice sound "faster" that a sloppy 32th spill back and forth the scale.

umm, yeah altho I don't understand what ya saying about those 32's and whatnot I agree that leads should have "meter" too but too much are focusing on leads and forgot how important is to play rhythm parts very tightly.... maybe I make a big deal out of it but It disturbs me, I've been blessed with great timing and meter and I've been playing syncopated funk riffs from early on... so I'm always paying attention to the tightness of the rhythm. I really enjoy listening to Motley Crue altho Mick Mars is not the greatest lead player, he is unbeliveably tight with the rhythm section, or same thing with Malcolm Young of ACDC.

Yeah, the bedroom shredders are a certain breed of players, I understand.
But I mean you either got timing or not, whatever your focus is. If the dude is incapable of playing steady 8ths "chugga-chugga" on an open low E string, this means that all his "shredding" is sloppy and most likely with poor tone.

                  I can't stand metronomes.
I use a 4 measure drum loop that has an accent hit on the snare in the first measure.
I don't "shred" as I suck at solos. I use the drum track to keep my timing sharp.

I apologize, Endrik. I am not saying you are like Brett. I am saying that the description the V used sounds a lot like Brett. I came back to clarify my statement but you had beat me to it.

                            Once again I am sorry!!
