As stated above, metronome is key. I use it all the time. Granted, I'm not perfect, but it's helped TONS. The only downside is that it's made me entirely too anal about my playing LOL :ROTF:

play some fear factory from Demanufacture/obsolete - while those albums are mostly in mid-tempos the picking styles change and there's alot of muting required which is good for metal - later on i think i practiced with albums of USA Disgorge/Suffocation etc.

          Downpick are essential
Trempicking ? yup - clean and tight 16'ths and triplets plus all those fear factory things like 2x16'th notes and one 8 over and over again.
Remember to stay relaxed and ALWAYS warm up before picking - I can hear terribly well when i haven't warmed up properly before a rehearsal.

For Warming up what spivonious wrote - Rock Discipline - physical exercises and some 1234 runs etc.

Wow,I missed this!! I have forgotten about some of those bands!! Well for starters,PRACTICE Alternate,Tremolo and downpicking, with a (You guessed it)Metronome! Also what helps,is alot of single string fast picking(Napalm Death does this and alot of Different "Death Metal" bands and string skip.Skip from "E" string to "D"string. Pat O'Brien from Cannibal Corpse has some REALLY Neat riffs, and a good one is Suffocation.Old Thrash??How about Old Skool S.O.D.?

And then you could always try.....metronome + more practice
Another good idea would be.....use a metronome and practice.
Sorry, what is Metronome? is it a practise or some software like guitar pro you have to download?

My metronome used to keep really lousy time, but it seemed to get better over the years.

                  To go fast, go slow...

Choke up on the pick too. That seems to have helped me a lot with the speed. Plus it's easier to do those pinch harmonics and jump right back into riffing.

What kind of picks to you all (y'all in local vernacular)...use?
I have found a Dunlop Green tortex is the best for fast picking,
I actually pre-form them into a curve to get harmonics from them.
And I hold them really short up. I can get a fast action from a thin
pick, but the sound is not the same, and I get sloppy with them.

I also have some of those Dunlop Stylus "training" picks, but I
have a real problem with them, grabbing.

Mine depends on the strings. On My Baritone(Which I havent touched for awhile),I use a heavier gauge(1.14mm because heavier gauge strings)) but normally I use a .88 Green Tortex.
