scales and a mentronome....pick one scale like (ie the natrual minor (all postioning of it as well) and roll with it...play 3, 4 and 6 note patterns on the each click...start slow and gradually increase bpms on the mentonome. Also try to play as fast as you possible can but accurate to know get a handle of where you current bar is set to and what you need to push yourself past that point. Try to remain relaxed as you possibly can...some folks tense up when they try to play fast but that will only hurt ya...just be relaxed and roll throught the sequenes with a metronome and you'll notice an improvment pretty quick.

I meant it in the aspect of speed. Metallica is slow compared to Slayer IMO. I think Kerry King would agree they play faster than most Metallica stuff. I was grabbing for names as I typed the question. And of coarse my mind went blank. Thanks for the suggestions.

Well, there are two different picking styles there. Slayer is more alternate picking, Metallica is mostly down picking. Are you trying to increase alternate picking speed then? I'd say you should first increase your accuracy. Try learning to "Inside pick" when alternate picking. You can google that and see what I mean.

well, that's what he said in this interview and Kerry King has a very high place in the guitar players' society. Slayer's riffs might not be as complex as Metallica's or other bands out there, but they sure play fast! If I find that article, I will quote from it.
