• Arpeggio sweeps

Here is a Am arpeggio pattern I've been practicing lately.

e------------12-17-12-------------------13-17-|
b----------13--------13---------------13------|
g--------14------------14-----------14--------|
d------14----------------14-------15----------|
a-12-15--------------------15-12-15-----------|
e--------------------------------------------|

e13--------------------13-17-13---------------|
b--13----------------15--------15-------------|
g----14------------14------------14-----------|
d------15--------15----------------15---------|
a--------15-12-17--------------------17-11----|
e---------------------------------------------|

e----------12-16-12---------------------------|
b--------12--------12-------------------------|
g------13------------13-----------------------|
d----14----------------14---------------------|
a--14-------------------14-12-----------------|
e---------------------------------------------|

Great sweeping ex. The different patterns keep you on your toes, yet it flows nicely after you get it down.

Great post Dave, good timing too, I've been playing nothing but arpeggio's these days for extra practice .. I tried it out on my guitar and it sounds great, need some practice to get it up to speed though; especially at the part where it goes from 12 to 17.. having small hands is a pain in the ass

Yeah. That one can get you fingers in a knot! The first two patterns can trip you up just because they are so similar.

Yeah, I gotta practice getting my finger roll up to par. Gambale said he has calass (*sp) up and down his fingers from rolling while sweeping.

Word had the idea. I should have posted a little sound clip but I am at work right now. To start just play it slow until you have it down but always "Push" you pick down then "Pull" it up in a even continuous motion. In other words, don't pick each note like you typically would.

Re: Arpeggio sweeps

I have always wanted to learn how to do these - thanks for the post! But, is it possible to explain exactly how to do these? I don't get the references to 'rolling your finger', etc. Thanks in advance.

Re: Arpeggio sweeps

It's a left hand technique. When you have to play notes at the same fret on consecutive strings, you don't lift your finger from (f.e) the 1st note to the 2nd, but "roll" it instead. So in the first sweep in Dave's exercise above, you fret the 14th on the D as normal (with the tip of your finger) and then "roll" your finger onto the 14th on the G, so you're fretting the 2nd note with the pad of the finger instead of the point. When you're coming back down, you fret the higher note with the pad of your finger and "roll" onto the point on the 2nd note.
(hope that makes sense)
