Symphony X tab

I'm trying to learn some symphony X (fallen and divine wings of tragedy) and i've noticed some really fast single string tap things. Do you know whether he picks or pulls/hammers/taps all the notes? And would alternative picking on the low strings be easier if they were a lighter gauge (I just can't do the little bit before the first fill in fallen. Thanx

It will take a brave soul to tab out his stuff. I know that he uses 10's that are tuned down a whole step. I just recently saw them live in Seattle. Great show and he makes it look easy!
